Audiences have seen a few versions of Arthurian legend in recent years. On the big screen, Transformers: The Last Knight kitchen sink’d King Arthur and his pals for some reason, and Charlie Hunnam tried to punch his way to victory in Guy Ritchie‘s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword. And on the small screen, and probably the best of the bunch, was the 2008 series Merlin. Well it’s about to get some competition thanks to a new deal between Netflix, Frank Miller, and Tom Wheeler (Puss in Boots, The LEGO Ninjago Movie).
As Deadline reports, Netflix’s Cursed will be yet another reimagining of Arthurian legend, one that has comics legend Miller and Wheeler writing and illustrating a YA book by the same name. Yep, the 10-episode series order is going to be a simultaneous adaptation of the Simon & Schuster publication that will debut in the fall of 2019. Series co-creators Miller and Wheeler will also act as executive producers, with Wheeler writing the book and Miller providing illustrations.
The series/book will center on a key character from the mythology as a sort of origin story since it follows Nimue, “a teenage heroine with a mysterious gift who is destined to become the powerful (and tragic) Lady of the Lake.” After Nimue’s mother days, she partners up with a young mercenary by the name of Arthur as they attempt to find Merlin and obtain a magical sword. It’s on this journey that Nimue becomes a rallying point for the rebellion against King Uther and his Red Paladins.
Here’s what Miller had to say, via statement:
“I have always been entranced by the mythological Arthur story—and by Nimue, in particular. It can be interpreted in any number of ways—from a delightful children’s story, as in The Sword in the Stone, to a terrifying interpretation like Excalibur.“
Wheeler followed up:
“I am honored and humbled to be working with the living legend Frank Miller on Cursed. I cannot think of a writer-artist who has had a more formative impact on my growth as a storyteller.”
