MYSTERY TEAM Director Dan Eckman Adapting THE BOY WHO COULDN’T SLEEP AND NEVER HAD TO; Directing Episode of Community This Season

     August 24, 2011

Derrick Comedy’s Mystery Team is a great flick that has held up on repeat viewings and I hope that more people check it out since there’s about 15 different ways to catch it.  The film’s director, Dan Eckman recently directed the MTV movie Worst. Prom. Ever. producing alongside Meggie McFadden and DC Pierson.  Today, Steve was on the set of NBC’s Community and learned that Eckman will be directing this season’s thirteenth episode.

But the even larger piece of news is that Eckman recently co-wrote with Pierson and McFadden an adaptation of Pierson’s terrific novel The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To.  It’s not a comedy like Mystery Team but a heartfelt coming-of-age story that weaves in sci-fi and fantasy elements.  Eckman confirmed to us that they’re currently taking the script to studios and production companies and that he intends to make it his next movie.  I’ve got my fingers crossed on this one.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the novel.

Here’s the synopsis for The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To:

A wildly original and hilarious debut novel about the typical high school experience: the homework, the awkwardness, and the mutant creatures from another galaxy.

When Darren Bennett meets Eric Lederer, there’s an instant connection. They share a love of drawing, the bottom rung on the cruel high school social ladder and a pathological fear of girls.  Then Eric reveals a secret: He doesn’t sleep. Ever.  When word leaks out about Eric’s condition, he and Darren find themselves on the run. Is it the government trying to tap into Eric’s mind, or something far darker?  It could be that not sleeping is only part of what Eric’s capable of, and the truth is both better and worse than they could ever imagine.
