We’ve got a couple of writer stories to share with you today. First up, Disney is continuing development on an adaptation of Matthew Reilly‘s young adult book series Hover Car Racer as they’ve set a new writer on the project. Heat Vision reports that X2: X-Men United scribe Dan Harris has been tapped to work on the script for the sci-fi adventure pic. The film takes place in a future where humans travel in vehicles that float a few feet off the ground. As such, racing the vehicles has become “a glamorous sport” and the story centers on a young man who enters an international race.
The Mouse House has been trying to crack the adaptation since 2004, as David DiGilio, John Sayles and Blaise Hemingway have all taken a pass at the script. They’re no doubt hoping that the fourth time’s the charm with Harris now onboard. The scribe also wrote 2006’s Superman Returns, but hasn’t had a feature produced since 2007. Hit the jump for the news regarding Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the supernatural fantasy novel A Discovery of Witches.
With the Harry Potter franchise now over, Warner Bros. is on the search for a new successful film series to fill the ginormous void. The studio acquired the rights to Deborah Harkness’ novel A Discovery of Witches last summer, and now Heat Vision reports that they’ve set playwright David Auburn to handle scripting duties. The story centers on “a scholarly woman who is a direct descendant of the first woman executed at the Salem Witch Trials that accidentally discovers a long-lost manuscript that may contain the secret of immortality. She is thrust into a position where she and a 1,500 year old vampire must stop an inter-species war between witches and vampires.”
The book is the first of a planned trilogy, and the supernatural aspect certainly appeals to the Harry Potter and Twilight audiences. Auburn won a Pulitzer and Tony award for his play Proof, and also wrote the Keanu Reeves/Sandra Bullock romantic drama The Lake House.
Here’s the synopsis for A Discovery of Witches:
Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell. [Amazon]
