Daniel Craig Closes Deal to Star in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO Trilogy

     July 26, 2010

Daniel Craig has closed a deal to star in David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo as well as its two sequels, The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s NestDeadline reports that Craig will begin filming in early fall after he wraps on Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens.  Combined with James Bond—which is currently in stasis due to MGM’s financial woes—Craig is now in two major franchises and possibly a third since he has an option on a Cowboys & Aliens sequel.

In the “Millennium Trilogy” (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first part) , Craig will play disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist, but the role attracting the most attention is that of asocial but brilliant hacker/researcher Lisbeth Salander.  Reportedly, the final candidates for the part are Emily Browning (Sucker Punch), Sarah Snook (Sleeping Beauty), Sophie Lowe (Blame), Rooney Mara (Fincher’s upcoming The Social Network), and an unidentified French actress.  Hit the jump for a synopsis of the book.  The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is slated to open on December 21, 2011.

Here’s the official synopsis for the book [via Amazon.com]

Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden’s wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.

It should also be noted that if filming is set for Sweden, then it looks like Fincher isn’t going to Americanize the movie.  The book has already been adapted into a Swedish film by Niels Arden Oplev.  It is currently available to Watch Instantly on Netflix.
