There have been rumblings of a second sequel to 28 Days Later over the past couple years, many of them perpetrated by director Danny Boyle himself. Boyle confirmed to Dread Central that a third 28 Days film is “in the works,” which he suggests could follow the pattern under the name 28 Months Later. He followed that relatively minor news with this exciting tidbit: “Actually, I want to direct it.” Boyle directed the first film, then handed the reins off to Juan Carlos Fresnadillo for the follow-up 28 Weeks Later. This is far from confirmation that he will direct, but Boyle seems jazzed by the idea they have for the new feature. As evidenced in his restless body of work, the best kind of Boyle is marked by an eager sort of adrenaline.
Following the release of 127 Hours, Boyle’s next project teams him with Stephen Daldry to direct the 2012 London Olympics. Click here for a video interview Boyle conducted with Steve circa 2008 where he talks about the conceit behind the sequel, which he calls “risk-taking” and “challenging to the franchise.”
