It looks like composer Danny Elfman may finally be reteaming with director Sam Raimi. After being collaborators for a number of years, the two had a bit of a falling out over the score for Spider-Man 2. Now, it appears that things have been smoothed over as Elfman recently revealed (Film Music Reporter via The Playlist) that he’s going to be scoring Raimi’s Wizard of Oz prequel Oz The Great and Powerful. The film stars James Franco, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Zach Braff. Oz The Great and Powerful hits theaters March 8th, 2013.

In addition to Oz, Eflman also said that he’s in talks to score Gary Ross’ highly anticipated adaptation of The Hunger Games. While no deal is closed just yet, Elfman is eying the assignment. Based on the bestselling book series, the film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth. The Hunger Games will be released on March 23rd, 2012.

[Update: Movies.com confirms that Elfman is indeed scoring The Hunger Games alongside singer/songwriter/producer T. Bone Burnett, who won an Oscar for his work on Crazy Heart]

  1. Please god no, Elfman was a great composer for a certain filmmaker for awhile, but all of his stuff sounds too similar, think they his darkness without his whimsy for Hunger Games, and the man is all about whimsy.

    • …and amazingly all of John Williams’s stuff sounds like John Wiliams’s stuff. Composers each have a unique style attributed to them and therefore get films that want their “sound.”

That being said, he is more than qualified for The Hunger Games. He is not just Burton and Sonnenfeld. He has done work for A Simple Plan, Red Dragon, The Kingdom. Hardly “whimsy.”

      • to each his own, I am a huge fan of Oingo Boingo and Elfman’s late 80′s early 90′s soundtracks but the man is not John Williams, Williams’s scores are part and parcel with their respective films…you dont hear the Star Wars theme and not think of Star Wars or Superman and not think of Superman…if I hear Any of Elman’s more recent scores I still think of Tim Burton movies.

    • You know, I must say though, when Danny Elfman scores films that aren’t done by Tim Burton, I really, really like his music. He wrote fantastic music for Milk, The Wolfman, and Red Dragon. However, when he scores movies for Tim Burton, he reverts to a sound that is no longer interesting because everything sounds too “Danny Elfman.”

  2. OH THANK GOD! not really as crazy with Elfman’s score as before(when i was just starting out as a movie buff and John Williams and Elfman are the only composers i know), but it’s nice to see that the two friends are back together.

and i heard, it wasn’t a simple falling out. the fight was huge. look at Elfman’s comments on Raimi after Spiderman 2. a really really strong anti-Raimi comment.. nice that friends are back together(there were a similar fight between Elfman and Burton way back in the 90s, and they have patched it up nicely. PEACE ON EARTH FOLKS)

    • Oingo Boingo reference. Funny.

…and he likes to party with dead people…and study science that’s weird…and I’m pretty sure Bridget Fonda isn’t so little anymore.

  3. Elfman is a great composer. My second choice will lay on Michael Giacchino ( the John Williams of the coming days)

  4. this should be Trent Reznor stuff. i really love his Social Network score. because it’s really unique.. Punk-y and doesn’t take over the film, but adds gravities to it.. though i would prefer here if he takes over the scene.. i think this is an action picture
