Warner Bros. has announced that filming has commenced on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.  Their announcement also confirms that the movie will be shooting on three continents: North America (Pittsburgh, New York, and Los Angeles), Europe (England and Scotland), and Asia (India).  Furthermore, the press release partially confirms our story when we said that Nolan was possibly shooting the entire film in IMAX.  While the entire movie won’t be shot in IMAX, the press release states:

“Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras.  The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film.”

Hit the jump to read the full press release.  The film stars Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy, Joseph-Gordon Levitt, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, and Michael Caine.  The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

Here’s the press release:

PRODUCTION BEGINS ON “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES”

Filming will take place on three continents, with an all-star cast
working under the direction of Christopher Nolan.

BURBANK, CA, May 19, 2011 – Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.

Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox.

In helming “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras.  The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film.

The screenplay for “The Dark Knight Rises” is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer.  The film is being produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.”  The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer.  “The Dark Knight” is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics.  Batman was created by Bob Kane.

Behind the scenes, “The Dark Knight Rises” reunites the director with several of his longtime collaborators, all of whom worked together on the “The Dark Knight.”  The creative team includes director of photography Wally Pfister, who recently won an Oscar® for his work on Nolan’s “Inception”; production designer Nathan Crowley; editor Lee Smith; and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”).  In addition, Paul Franklin and Chris Corbould, who both won Oscars® for the effects in “Inception,” will supervise the visual and special effects, respectively.  The music will be composed by Oscar® winner Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King”).

The locations for “The Dark Knight Rises” span three continents and include the American cities of Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles, as well as sites in India, England and Scotland.

“The Dark Knight Rises” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Legendary Pictures.  Slated for release on July 20, 2012, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

    Oh the pain of anticipation.

  • Cali Kid

Hopefully they have a teaser trailer for it before Transformers 3. The teaser trailer for the Dark Knight was before the very first Transformers. Just give me something!!!!

  • Matt1

I wanna go get in line right now!!!

I hope the climactic fight between Christian Bale and Tom Hardy will knock everyone on their ass and be so amazing and action-packed, audiences all over the world will be left breathless.

    • Aurora Vampiris

I wouldn’t count on that. Nolan has created well-crafted short visceral bursts of action – but I don’t think he sets much store on long, climactic action sequences.

I would, like, die to be in The Dark Knight Rises. Being around all those hot guys. That would be my biggest dream in life! I want to be a villainess! I would be one that was probably nice – no, I kind of want to be evil! I don’t know what I’d want to be – just a villainess. I didn’t read the comic books, but my little brothers are obsessed with Batman.

  • Tey

I hope WB execs won’t stop Nolan by killing off Batman

  • Johanna Börjeson

Wohoo!! Let me tell you, this will be an Anne Hathaway you’ve never seen, and she’s going to knock everyone’s socks off in The Dark Knight Rises! You are going to be so killed by her performance. I can’t tell you how good she is going to be as a strong, empowered, sexy Catwoman. Oh, she is going to be so good in this. It’s unbelievable the performance she is going to give. It’s amazing. Hahah.. freakin’ fantastic, can’t wait! Man! I feel like a woman!

  • Lennox

The cast still seems like it’s incomplete and smaller compared to the first two films. It feels like it’s missing more recognisables actors and key characters.

  • Stephen Staunton

I should be feeling so effin’ happy about this, until I noticed – where is James Newton Howard?

  • David I.

Didn’t Steve tweeted that TDKR will be filming in Romania? What ever happened to that?

  • Nick

    must we wait so long???

  • JY

Their shooting nearby my house!! a section of st john street was closed where i usually park my car, it great to live in London…until they move production that is…

  • VALENTINEproductions

NEW YORK! The birth place of the Batman and the REAL Gotham city! FINALLY!

  • Alex H

Wait… So Gotham City isn’t in this one at all? Or are they just not using Chicago as Gotham for this one…?

  • jackjack

For sure, without a contribution of James Newton Howard it won’t be a true trilogy.

    • buddhifree

exactly! i cant even begin to wonder why they removed newton howard.

    • danielplainview

i sort of sensed that James Newton Howard won’t be back because it seems Nolan feels like he has found his “John Williams” or “Danny Elfman” with Hans Zimmer(evidenced why he picked him alone in Inception)

also if you watched the DVD bonus on TDK about the joker score, Zimmer is in the spotlight. he composed that truly great score by himself, and Newton Howard composed those not so memorable(but good) score. as for the Batman Begins theme, they both composed it. but it’s already written. maybe Nolan didn’t feel like he needed Newton Howard anymore. after all, both Zimmer and Newton Howard are accomplished composers by themselves.

saddened by the news(as with every collaborators not working again), but i think there is a reason.

  • Alex H

I wonder why James Newton Howard isn’t collaborating with Zimmer for this one…

  • buddhifree

    they removed james newton howard?!

My schedule is all cleared up just this shit next year. Can’t wait!:D

James Newton Howard. I just wanted to feel a part of things by mentioning his name in a post.

  • Dude

I’m disappointed at the Catwoman casting. While Ledger topped Nicholson’s Joker, I feel Hathaway’s awkward girly shtick is no match for the confident female sexuality required of Catwoman, ala Michelle Pfeiffer. Still better than Halle Berry, but a more solid actress should’ve been selected.

    • Alex H

      Kate Beckinsale or Naomi Watts

Either one would have been PERFECT for the role.

  • Tarek

If Nolan leads the project, I’m going to buy my ticket for sure.
