Last week we reported the exciting news that a 6-minute prologue from The Dark Knight Rises will be attached to IMAX prints of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol. Well, now it looks like only certain IMAX theaters will have the footage. AMC Theaters reports that the footage will only screen on the higher resolution 70mm IMAX screens, not the digital IMAX screens. A reason for the specificity isn’t given, nor does AMC have confirmation of which locations will be screening the footage. Hopefully we’ll find out soon. In the meantime, start searching for the nearest 70 mm IMAX screen and get ready to have your mind blown by Batman and Tom Cruise in the same theater. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol opens on IMAX screens December 16th and on regular screens December 21st. The Dark Knight Rises is slated for July 20th, 2012.

I for one am glad that Matt didn’t make this report. This is exciting news and doesn’t need any negativity.

Also Fuck ya to this anything that combines awesome cinema experiences with even awesomer cinema experiences, and also skin tight leather clad Anne Hatheway.

Do we REALLY need Matt Goldberg bashing even on articles he didn’t write? Seriously, the negativity coming from anti-Matts are starting to get far more annoying than actual Matt

I understand why they would want to show this on the highest-quality screens, but aren’t almost all AMC IMAX screens digital?

The nearest 70mm IMAX is like 100 miles away from where I live. For me, I would rather see the prologue on digital IMAX than not at all.

this comment is coming from AMC theaters…until an official comment comes from warner bros. I’m not convinced it wont be on digital IMAX screens

Wait, does this mean that when TDKR comes out, I will be paying money to see an incomplete movie… unless I go see MIIIV in Imax? Or will the prologue still be shown at the theatrical release?

For the Short answer, skip the following paragraph.

Its going to be something like the the Jokers bank heist from from The dark Knight, something so fricking amazing that you will consider going up into the mountains and freezing yourself with out a jacket and then having Butters come and unfreeze you upon The Dark knight Rises opening day. But be warned if you take this route Otters might evolve and convince everybody there that God is bad and all copies of Gods creation will be destroyed and since The dark Knight Rises was created by our God Nolan, you may never see the movie unless you break into the place where they preserve movies for their significance to culture or something and this one will be on the highest of the highly protected and preserved movies so it might be hard to break out with that copy.

For the simple answer skip the following paragraph.

The movie will be complete and in all likelyhood the clip will get released online briefly by a damn bootlegger (how dare they try to spread the word of the chosen one to those not fortunate enough to have an imax theater near them) and then quickly taken down due to copyright infringement.

The Prologue will be shown in the theatrical release.

Well this sucks, seeing as almost no real 70mm IMAX screens exist anymore (the nearest to me is a 20 hour round trip) guess I won’t be seeing it. Trust me, if it was available I would love to see it on a proper 70mm IMAX screen, but IMAX has gone all gung-ho for digital and replaced many of their real IMAX locations with Lie-MAX digital.

Lame. One would think that a movie fan like Chris Nolan might stand up a little more for his fellow movie-goers. Super-lame. That is all.

Couple things. 1 – I think if there would be ANY director who would stand up for his fans against the studio for the sake of artistic integrity, it would be Nolan.

2 – I think he actually IS standing up for movie goers. The reason I say this is because most of the Imax theaters installed in the last 5 or so years have been “fake” Imax conversions – normal sized auditoriums that are given a slightly larger screen and an digital Imax projector installed. Because they are technically using Imax equipment, they can lie and say it’s shown in Imax and charge for the full price, when in reality, you aren’t seeing it on the full sized screen it was designed for. I’m guessing that most of the 70mm Imax theaters out there are from when Imax were still built full size. My guess is that Nolan wants this 6 minute prolgue seen shown on as large a screen as possible, so as not to rip off the fans who make a special trip to an Imax theater just to see the prologue.

      (but that’s just my theory)

Awesome, well I hope they show this in Australia as well, there’s a 70mm IMAX theatre in Sydney. But you never know, they might follow the same thing they did with HPDH2, the teaser was supposed to be attached to it, but they never showed it in Australia. Pity about that, would’ve loved to see bane on the big screen.

I think that there is a 70mm IMAX screen at the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City. The last time I checked though they don’t show feature films.

So the link to AMC’s blog only reads: “The information in this post has been retracted until further notice. Please refer to Warner Bros. for any information about The Dark Knight Rises.”

    Hrm….
