First Official Image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

     August 5, 2011

Yesterday, we got our first look at Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.  Today, Warner Bros. has released the first official image of Anne Hathaway as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises.  I hope we’re not looking at the final Catwoman costume since there’s nothing particularly cat-like about it.  It looks like Anne Hathaway was watching 3DTV and left her glasses on when she hopped on the Bat-pod.  I’ve over-analyze this image more, but I leave that to you good people.  I imagine that Catwoman scenes are about to start filming in the streets of Pittsburgh and Warners wanted to get an official image out before all the cell-phone snappers started releasing low-quality versions for us to dissect.  We’re still going to do that anyway just like we did with these set photos of Bane fighting Batman.

Hit the jump to check out the full image and more of my thoughts on the design.  The film also stars Christian Bale, Tom Hardy, Marion Cotillard, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine.  The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

Again, I hope this isn’t the final look but I have a sneaking suspicion that it is.  The image was release on the official Dark Knight Rises website and the image is titled “selina_kyle” (Catwoman’s alter-ego).  Yes, the “goggles” (seriously, they look like the glasses you get with a 3D television) are a part of the recent Catwoman costume but so are cat-ears and claws.  The larger point is that perhaps Nolan can’t find a reason for that design or even a character with the name “Catwoman” to exist in his world.  I’m not asking for a Batman Returns or Catwoman design (a t-shirt reading “I am Catwoman and this is my costume” would be better than Halle Berry’s Catwoman costume), but Nolan’s insistence on grounding his Batman movies in reality really kicks the wind out of some fantastical designs.  However, he found a way to dress the Joker in purple and he’s given Bane (Tom Hardy) a goofy mask, so I don’t see why Catwoman can’t get a costume that has a little comic-book flair to it.

I don’t like it. I don’t get the Catwoman vibe at all.

  • Super Dumb

Wow, nice misleading title there, Matt. This ISN’T Hathaway as ‘Catwoman’, but Hathaway as ‘Selena Kyle.’

But I guess Selena Kyle wouldn’t attract as many hits, so hence the misleading title. Way to treat your readers as stupid sheep. Thanks.

    • colliderBLOWS

      ^ This 1000000000 times.

    • broski

I wasn’t aware that Selina Kyle walks around in a skin tight leather outfit wearing dumb looking goggles.

    • Howard

I’ve been wondering if “Catwoman” will appear in this movie, or just Selena Kyle.

    • JLC

Entertainment Weekly is describing these pictures as “Catwoman.” Entertainment Weekly is part of the Warner Brothers empire. I’m sure if Nolan didn’t want her described as Catwoman, a memo would have gone around. If she’s not Catwoman in these photos, she will be by the end of the movie.

    • Super Smart

      Super Dumb… super dumb.

  • mrbatmatt

    Really? Is it…? Ehhhhhhh, no…

  • seabass

‘hmmmmmmm’ is how i feel about this. i expected catwoman to look similar to this because of nolans realistic views but expected more now ive seen it. perhaps the full mask will come into play abit later in the film as the character becomes more developed.

anyway i dont dislike the outfit and im not over the moon. its solid and seeing that she is on the batpod is very interesting. my guess is that she takes over batmans reigns after bane breaks him near the beginning of the film and then batman comes back kills bane towards the end. i also think catwoman will start off as foe and then becomes a villain right at the end.

overall yeh i could live with this

  • JLC

I watched Burton’s Batman again on AMC last night. Not a perfect movie, to be sure, but, man I still love that Gothic look he gave his films in the series. Boiled to its essence, Batman is about a guy who dresses like Dracula and beats up psychopathic clowns. Nolan’s “realistic” take on the subject matter is great, but it really handcuffs him when it’s time to introduce more fantastic elements.

I’m hoping he backslides a little in this one back into Begins territory. If you’re not going to slap a catsuit on Anne Hathaway, what’s the point of casting her?

    • broski

Agreed 100%, it’s one reason I’m not as huge of a fan of TDK as I am with Batman Begins. Too much realism is a bad thing when it comes to Batman…the whole “grounded realism” take can only go on for so long before it gets stale, especially with the more freakish and fantastical Batman villains like Clayface, Killer Croc, Mr. Freeze, etc. I hope whoever reboots this franchise in a few years will bring back a lot of the gothic feel that you get from the Burton movies and the Arkham Asylum/Arkham City videogames. The Dark Knight didn’t felt more like a crime drama with Batman in it than an actual Batman movie. I really hope he’ll be going back to tone and feel of Batman Begins for this movie.

      • broski

The Dark Knight felt more like a crime drama*

        stupid typo

  • sense 11

I just want to jump in that frame and mmmmmmmmmmmmmhhhh,

I’m loving it and I’m sure that’s not the entire outfit.

  • jymmymack

They are definitely going for ‘the cat’ and not ‘catwoman’ which is why she was always identified in the press releases as Selena Kyle and not Catwoman.

  • ??tHe RidDleR???

I hope she nails this role because i still can’t believe she is playing Selena in this movie. I just don’t want it to be a CATastrophe or do I¿¿

I don’t get the Catwoman feel unlike Bane who while different looking still felt like his comicbook counterpart. Maybe Selina Kyle as a con-artist only and not Catwoman will be used? I don’t know. I also hope this isn’t the final costume design for the film.

i really like it. cat stealth… its great. she does not need pointy ears and purring

  • Jeff T.

    I am disappoint.

  • Josh Kaye

I’m not hating this outfit, but I don’t think this is the complete thing.

  • Interloper

    “Goofy mask”?!

  • Amar

Nolan is very secretive and he is also brings some originality in the script. So wait till first trailer launch.

  • Jason

Check out the picks here. Also, the pic of Marion Cottilard’s costumer confirms thoughs that her character name was indeed a cover for Talia al Ghul.

  • grittymcgritterson

Yup, you’re absolutely right Goldberg. There’s no passion in designing that costume. Nolan got this one wrong. Unless her costume changes this is going to look pathetic. Cant believe this was approved.

    • sense 11

Lame comment, you know that’s not the outfit but I guess haters will hate

    • Jon

What were your thoughts on Scarecrow’s costume in Batman Begins? It was simply a burlap sack, but worked far better than a guy dressed up like a scarecrow.

  • Jazzy Jace

I agree with most of comments here and I’m confident we’ll see her other outfit in due course. It remains to be seen if onset whisperings are true, that her proper outfit is way better than we were led to expect. After all, Anne has a banging body, wear an outfit to make our mouths drop! If it’s a modification of AC’s version, then I will be a very happy man!

  • prashant

Lets not hasten our perspectives, yes the images look like we are deceived but lets trust nolan. But still i feel the essence shouldnt lost CATWOMAN which i grossly remember was last n best potrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer. Hope Anna adds some substance to the character which will be a major task. Best of luck.

  • Kurt

There have been some set photos posted over at Superhero hype that show the Stunt Double driving the Pod down the steps at City Hall and you can see the outfit much better. It looks god in the set shots. Matt post them up here with the official image

  • Jason Campbell

Anyone else wondering who left the garage door open at the bat cave? First Bane on the tumbler, now Selina on the bike? I think Alfred is in for a poor annual review.

She is about to run someone with the bat pod. The reflection of the victim is in the right sun glass. But I do not understand who it is!

  • Joe

Anne Hathaway was always a shit choice for this role. She doesn’t have what it takes physically or in terms of sex appeal, to pull this character off convincingly. Kate Beckinsale would have been a far superior choice.

Hathaway has always been a bit gangly and goofy.

    • corey

Dude kate beckingsale cant act her way out of a paper bag, have you seen the underworld films? We dont know if anne hathaway is a shit choice for the character, because we do not know how nolan intends to use the character. Hell she could only be in the film for 20 minutes similar to how they used the scarecrow in batman begins. Not everything in the comic books work in movies, having cat woman dress up as the catwoman in the comics completely takes away from the validity of what nolan is trying to do with the franchise. And lastly i wouldn’t doubt Nolan’s casting chops he managed to make hugh jackman and scarlett johanson look good in the prestige thats no easy task rofl.

      • Clay

Disagree. Beckinsale can act, she just isn’t given enough quality roles. Although, I thought she was fine in Underworld. Personally, I would have gone with Eva Green.

  • C.K.

Yeah, WTF WTF WTF. Are you sure this isn’t a still from MISSION IMPOSSIBLE? Or an X-Box ad? I’m already NOT sold on Anne (see the smile a thousand miles away) Hathaway, and now THIS? “Hi Bruce, let me come over to Wayne Manor and take the batpod out in broad daylight after everyone’s seen us dating and would know you’re BATMAN by virtue of the fact that I’m on the batpod WITHOUT ANY KIND OF MASK CONCEALING MY IDENTITY.” Where’s emo black-suit Peter Parker when you need him?

  • Migz13

Well it sure does look “nolan-esque” for me.
Realistic, straight but still pays homage to the source material in a way.

  • Ryan

What i wanna know is, is Batman working with Selina here? Or is this the begining of the film and shes just stealing the Batpod for s**ts & giggles? That would explain the proto-suit at least. Also does Bane brake the Bat, hence him standing on the Tumbler, also leading to Selina trying to take Batmans place for a time? These are the things i care about. Not an out of context pic of what im sure is not a final Catwoman costume.

  • J.R.

It appears Black Widow entered the TDKR set and stole the Bat-POD……… Hally Berry is looking good after this,….

    • DAN

LOL :D but the black widow outfit is better than this, this looks like it came out of a spy kids movie…..

  • nawtnt

The whole picture looks like it is from Tron 3 with 3D glasses.

I hope The Dark Knight Rises turns out to be great after all, Green Lantern was a disater so let’s hope the film will be a great end to the trilogy.

  • Kenny B

Hey uncle Alfred. Its Christopher Nolan, have no fear. It will turn out just fine.

  • jim35

like it. it looks muuuuuch better than what they did with bane and talia.

  • Rob H

Looks like the real costume to me. Look at the full-resolution pic: the goggles she’s wearing look like part of a catwoman outfit. Also, why would Selena Kyle (as herself) don said goggles and ride the bat-pod?

  • A Jamaican

what if its only a prototype suit just like what batman had before he donned the actual batman suit!

You’re right, this movie will suck because Catwoman won’t have a mask with cat ears. Come on, get a grip people.

I never wanted Catwoman from the beginning. Having said that, I love this look.

  • Ranger

Only thing that has me worried are all the Batman tools that other ccharacters than Batman are using, like the camo tumbler and the batpod used by catwoman. I´ll say what eveyone is saying: i have faith in nolan. he will present a cool vision to third movie with batman equipped with cool new gadgets that are exlusive to him. Bane on top of a camo tumbler could be they stole it from wayne enterprises. but batman beeing batman will come up with new tools.

About the catwoman: i like that suit very much, but were did she get it from? from Wayne of course, who realized he can´t handle the leauge of shadows himself.

  • Derek K.

I think people should simply shut their mouths and hold their comments until the film is released. Are guys honestly doubting Christopher Nolan? He will not disappoint.

  • bobadubsjabba

Everyone calm down. Haven’t you ever heard of a day-for-night shoot? This “heist” scene might very well be a night scene, especially in Nolan’s world. Therefore, I think the 3D goggles might in fact be night vision goggles. Not that goofy seen in that perspective. Love the boots on the other on-set shots. Better than the washed out Kal-El costume.

  • T. Van

I suspect that the glasses will provide the character with a good deal of information (e.g. augmented reality that even goes beyond night vision), and that they will be a key source of her “abilities.”

The fact that so much Batman tech is being used by other characters is obviously a variable in the story. In fact, I wonder if Catwoman is driving a bike which Wayne previously wrecked and discarded…

  • LUKA

    • Wladi

Totally agree…wonder how such a douche like goldberg got a columnist job…

  • gorgo

I love all Nolan’s interpretation of comic book characters in his Gotham City universe…except this one. This is something you would expect from a GI JOE and, God no, POWER RANGERS movies.

  • Carmichael

Design wise, she should have underwear in her face. That’s the new trademark of a bad guy.

  • Ash Talon

This is the “Catwoman” costume. There isn’t a final costume for her. Her goggles flip up which makes them look like cat ears.

The fact that she doesn’t try to hide her identity (while breaking into places) or restrict her hair (leaving hair evidence behind would not be very smart) is completely retarded. She’s obviously not a very smart criminal.

So grounded…and yet not a very intelligent or useful design.

  • Lob Taylor

Am not a fan of Batman and the films( I think his villians are just inane) But this Catwoman looks kickass for sure. Bane looks like another lame villain in a long line of lame villains . Doesn’t mean am bothering with this till the dvd comes out at the discount bin of the local Best Buy.

    • Clay

I’ll never understand why people take the time to leave carefully thought comments about news stories they don’t care about.

  • TV_guy

christopher nolan reassuring me i will hate ‘the dark knight rises’ just as much as his first two batman movies. is this even considered a costume?

“I’ve over-analyze this image more, but I leave that to you good people.”

Firstly, I think you mean that you “over-analyzed” the image. Secondly, I do not think that you have “analyzed” the image at all, let alone “over-analyzed” it. Maybe the goggles have some relevance to the story, much like the visors that Batman wore at the end of The Dark Knight. That could have been relevant to mention. Also, given that Selina is riding a batpod (or at the very least, a batpod-like vehicle), it might not be that stretch to possibly assume that the goggles are Wayne tech, which means that she either stole them or was given them by Bruce, Lucius or Alfred. That is heresay and speculation that I have offered, but it is a little more relevant than, ‘hey, you know, it is like, realistic and stuff.’

Also, I am confused by your suggestion: “I hope we’re not looking at the final Catwoman costume since there’s nothing particularly cat-like about it.” Why would Warner Bros – who are in the middle of shooting – release a picture that is anything other than the final costume?

Try to think before you write, and – as a result – you might stop writing garbage.

  • wildcatz

I like the suit. The thigh-high boots from the 1960′s comics, and the snug outfit and hipster belt much like Julie Newmar’s on TV.

I have a feeling Nolan/WB are setting up Selina Kyle for a proper Catwoman spin-off, so we might not see a final cat-costume yet. Not a bad idea considering DC is weak on contemporary superheroes, but strong on villains. I predict Catwoman 2014 and a Bat-reboot/re-imagining in 2016, or sooner if (when) G-Lantern 2 flops.

  • GH

You guys should chill out. It’s a pic, maybe she has many costumes.

This is only to ride and Nolan knows that people are looking, so he maybe holding out on the other parts….Trust the Nolan…that’s all!

  • ag

isnt her name selina? not selena?

  • sham

you know what..malaysia had our first superhero movie…and that catwoman looks like Rama..the supervillian in that film…..i could say 100%!!..may it be…..??

  • DON

One thing I dont like just hit me. It looks like Catwoman’s bike came from the same production line as Batman’s. Which makes sense from the “this is just a movie” POV. They were designed by the same people. But since Catwoman should have her own resources and avenues for getting equipment it would be good to have a more distinct design for her stuff as compared to Bat’s.
