New Images from THE DARK KNIGHT RISES; New Major Details Revealed

     November 21, 2011

A couple days ago, we showed you the covers for the new issue of Empire Magazine featuring Batman (Christian Bale) and Bane (Tom Hardy) from Christopher Nolan‘s The Dark Knight Rises.  The magazine has now hit stores, and scans have started hitting the Internet along with new details about the movie contained in the article.  We’ll update these lo-res images with higher quality versions as soon as they become available.  But I can say right now that I totally love the one of Bane holding up a photo of Harvey Dent.  If we ran caption contests on the site, I would use that image in a heartbeat.  I look at that image and I instantly think “Has anyone seen this district attorney?  He was last seen being burned alive.  This image may only be half-accurate.”

The issue also contains some major new details about the movie including how much time has passed since The Dark Knight.  Hit the jump to check out the images and new details about the film.  The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20, 2012.

[Possible Spoilers Ahead]

It’s been almost four years since The Dark Knight hit theaters, but it looks like time in Gotham City passes twice as fast.  Nolan tells Empire,

“It’s really all about finishing Batman and Bruce Wayne’s story. We left him in a very precarious place. Perhaps surprisingly for some people, our story picks up quite a bit later, eight years after The Dark Knight. So he’s an older Bruce Wayne; he’s not in a great state.”

the-dark-knight-rises-teaser-posterI would love to see Bruce Wayne trolling around the Batcave eating nothing but Ho-hos, pounding back Mountain Dew, and asking Alfred where he put the X-Box controller.  In all seriousness, that’s an impressive jump forward and it will be interesting to see how Gotham has changed by losing the Bat and never learning the truth about what happened to Dent.

So what can audiences expect to see if they show up for the prologue that runs ahead of the IMAX version of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol?  Nolan reveals:

“The Prologue is basically the first six, seven minutes of the film. It’s the introduction to Bane and a taste of the rest of the film. With Bane we are looking to give Batman a physical challenge that he hasn’t had before. In terms of finishing our story and increasing its scope, we were trying to craft an epic.”

Nolan may be trying to increase the scope and “craft an epic”, but he’s taking a page from the last movie by introducing the villain in the first ten minutes.  It’s an interesting choice since The Dark Knight had Batman fighting to be the main character in his own movie, and I’m curious to see if Nolan will give the movie over to the supporting cast again.

The Empire story also provides a lot of new detail about Bane.  Nolan explained why he chose Bane to be the villain:

“So when you’re looking to continue the story – in this case finish Bruce Wayne and Batman’s story, as we see it – then you certainly don’t want a watered-down version of a character you’ve already done. You want a different archetype. What Bane represents in the comics is the ultimate physical villain.”

the-dark-knight-rises-empire-cover-bane-tom-hardyTom Hardy elaborates on the “ultimate physical villain” aspect of his character:

“He’s brutal. Brutal. He’s a big dude who’s incredibly clinical, in the fact that he has a result-based and oriented fighting style. It’s not about fighting. It’s about carnage. The style is heavy-handed, heavy-footed, it’s nasty. Anything from small-joint manipulation to crushing skulls, crushing rib cages, stamping on shins and knees and necks and collarbones and snapping heads off and tearing his fists through chests, ripping out spinal columns. He is a terrorist in mentality as well as brutal action.”

If Nolan wants to go in a completely different direction than The Joker when it comes to his villain, it looks like he’s found it.  However, I’m not sure if besting a physical challenge is as interesting as beating the moral and psychological one presented in The Dark Knight.

Finally, for everyone wondering what’s going on with the mask, costume designer Lindy Hemming explains:

“He was injured early in his story. He’s suffering from pain and he needs gas to survive. He cannot survive the pain without the mask. The pipes from the mask go back along his jaw line and feed into the thing at the back where there are two canisters of what ever it is…the anesthetic.”

Protip for Batman: HIT THE CANISTERS.

I hope the climactic fight between Christian Bale and Tom Hardy will knock everyone on their ass.

    • Capn

Shut Up, Breckinridge. I’ve seen that generic statement regurgitated way too much in the last 24 hours on various sites.

Eight years? I like this series but skipping a huge span of his youth and thus career?

Interesting! So Bane is essentially Darth Vader, with a life support mask?
Ok, but what about the rage drug he takes to Hulk out?

Or is this instead a gas that stops him also feeling the pain from being hit? Good concept if so as it will make him painless so therefore relentless, as opposed to just brute strength. I like it!

  • Aido

Judging by the first trailer….what we see, and, more importantly hear in it…what if Christian Bales Batman doesnt exist after the first 6 minutes!?!?

    • Tarek

Impossible. Remember the title is Dark Knight “Rises”

  • sean

well this is awesome. Why wouldnt you want to introduce a new character in the first 7 minutes of the movie… i guess you could go first 20 like batman begins. but it makes sense… and this is bruce’s story as nolan has said. Bane isn’t just a physical threat as nolan has said. i like the psychological story as much as the next person but having someone challenged both mentally and physically is something we really havent seen…Bane is gonna scare the crap out of people when he comes to theaters july 2012!

  • murdernexxus

Is Bane in the batcave? It could be anywhere but a fight in the cave sounds awesome.

i’m not sure how i feel about the whole 8 year span. maybe it’ll end up being nothing, but i feel like – and i’m fully aware i’m adding fuel to the fire here – robin/nightwing will be in the movie then. can nolan really rely on the whole “young batman” argument if batman is nearly 40? i think nolan just revealed the inclusion of a younger “sidekick”

Eight years and no new Batsuit?

Tarek..just toying with the idea that he says in the trailer”what if the batman doesn’t exist anymore”

    • Tarek

I think that this points to a psychological conflict experienced by Bruce. Torn between the desire to drop out, and the need to continue to shoulder the huge reponsabilité to protect mankind against evil

i LOVE this article. it’s not really spoilery since weeks before the opening, trailers and behind the scenes on HBO will surely tell this things(but being completely unaware of the plot would reward a “better” viewing experience, it’s pretty impossible in our generation.)

Matt Goldberg smart-ass attitude in writing is really really irritating. go write a screenplay if you’re so smart. Diablo Cody was able to hit big, why not pour your “know-it-all” attitude in a script, there’s still time Matt. don’t waste your time, and OURS in a news site when you obviously don’t fit this media. heck if you write a really smart-ass character like yourself, it might even be funny.

    • Flyersfan20

Agreed. He can’t write an article without trying to make jokes or stupid one-liners. He can’t just write about the subject. He always HAS to put stupid comments in his articles thinking he’s funny.

      • MattTheHack

Yep, I cannot stand Matt Goldberg.

There is nothing wrong with a film writer making a joke, but it actually has to be a joke. That comment is not a joke. A joke should create some kind of misdirection or surprise; this is just a series of words.

    I love the spoilers!

I also love the fact that this takes place 8 years later. Makes me think:

    - The prologue Bane/Bats fight may take place not long after The Dark Knight, and Bane breaks Bruce’s back….leaving the Batman MIA for 8 years?

    - In 8 years, Bane could have the run of the city as the heir of the League Of Assassins along with Talia (though in disguise), who keeps Bruce in check from a business POV at Wayne Enterprises. Like Grant Morrison’s Batman RIP, it would be more satisfying for the villain(s) to break the Batman and keep him alive to see his failure.

    - Gordon gets injured severely, coaxing Bruce to visit him. Gordon appeals to the Batman to come out of retirement to take Bane down

    - A potential 8 year gap might solve some off screen Joker progression. Maybe Bane will have killed the Joker?

I love Nolan’s Bat Universe. Its very batman, without being a slave to comic book continuity (which I also love).

    • Jay-Me-Dee

      More thoughts:

      - I think Batman will die taking down Bane. I also think he’ll pass on the mantle of the Bat (Gordon Levitt?)

      - Will Bane have the anesthetic tanks because of Bruce? Maybe we will see Bane without a mask in the beginning?

      • EmmaLove

Nope. WB will not kill Batman.

    • What?

I actually really like that idea lol, I hope your right.

      • Jay-Me-Dee

        Thanks, What?

I like the idea that there is an 8 year progression…..especially in light of the Joker. It would really imply that if Bruce was the Batman for 8 years, they may have had dozens of epic showdowns and the Joker died at some point (of course, Batman wouldn’t have killed him)

  • Django3000

Does anyone else get the sense that they’re combining Bane with the leader of the punk gang of Mutants in the Dark Knight Returns?

Think about it… Batman in hiding, called back into the field by the emergence of a fresh-faced, insanely jacked up threat that came into being in his absence, who leads a new generation of Gotham-ites against the Bat?

I get the feeling that Chris Nolan knew, as his final film, it would be wise to distill a couple table-spoons of the best Batman stories all into one. Dark Knight certainly stands out as one that was never tackled on film … would be a smart, geek-tastic approach, if indeed that’s what we’re facing.

    8 Years?!?!

Damn…. the setting along makes me wanna see the damn thing NOW!!:D

  • wacko3205

    Eight years down & running?

I hate to be on the groupie side of things…but DAMN!!! Nolan brings some definite originality to the characters, city, & state of things in the Bat’s universe.

Love the fact that Bane’s still a junkie, more or less, but this time its on pain killers instead of Rage Roids. Odd twist. Can’t wait to see what’s up with Selena Kyle.

All that said…I’d love for JGL to be a background vigi & take over the mantle…someone’s gonna have to do it eventually…but the transitions gotta be a ruff, tuff, & tumbley one for it to pass.

Would JGL be a legit choice?

Sure…if he started out as Nightwing or some form of Azrael, only to be trained by the Bat…but please…NO ROBIN. I know that Nightwing comes from Robin & blah blah blah…but this is Nolan & Bale’s typeset…but Robin’s to much of a pa-noo-chey to fit into this story…Nightwing on the other hand…that could work.

Well…whatever Nolan comes up with…my ass’ll be parked in a seat in the nosebleedz or the breaknex section.

    Bring it on.

OBVIOUSLY all ANYONE cares about is the FIGHT scene pics!! We all want FIGHT SCENES and we all are hypocrites with ths “CGI sux” thing cuz then we make Transformers 3 gross a billion dollars ……so let’s just get to it we want to see bane and batman duke it out……and for those of you who will use internet trendy talk I am not a troll I am just aware of what you all think and feel :)

  • honey

I think Alfred gets killed as Batman and Bane fights in the start of the film in the Batcave. They both get hurt. Bruce breaks his back and Bane (I don´t know) smokes too much.
Bruce needs a new “housekeeper” and catwoman, who is really planning to rob Bruce W, gets the job. She finds out about the batman and discovers that Talia is trying to destroy Wayne industries from within. She helps batman with Talia. Bane is destroying Gotham and they fight again. They both get killed and Catwoman robs Bruce or he survives and get his back broken. And then gets robbed. Of cause Talia and Bane works together, trying to revenge the death of her farther.

  • blueorangeny

I think he’s bs’ing us. I don’t think it’s been 8 years. So much has been brought out to the open with pictures and videos that he perhaps is throwing us a wrench and smoking up windows so we can try to figure it out. Yet when film begins it’s different as far as time.

If time is 8 years pass and Bat is old then shit how old is Alfred lmao.

Also to someone mentioning that perhaps JGL will become Nightwing. I doubt it we would have seen some photos of it but it can be too. Maybe in those 8 years he was Robin.

Anyway….what do we knw till july 20

  • Used Batarang Collector

This movie will reference two main themes: we fall so we can pick ourselves back up and whoever Batman is he doesn’t want to do it forever. I’d like to see Bane convince Bruce Wayne that he can never quit after getting his back broken and returning for revenge but he might wind up training JGL as his replacement instead. If that happens I hope it’s more like Batman Beyond than anything with Robin. I know this is supposed to end the story but what was the point of everything Ra’s said about becoming a legend if this is it for Nolanbats?

  • terry

This movie will destroy any movie opening during the same weekend. Period!

I think that catwoman is going to fight crime for the 8 years while batman is on the run from police. I also think Bane will use the death of 2 face against batman (hence the picture of harvey he is holding) Damn I’m smart!!! I also think whoever said we might see robin is dumb. That would be stupid.

    • alfred eisenstein

lets go discuss robin on a british site. i read online that american sites have gone fascist. cheerio mate!

I’m so pumped for this film. everyone is talking about bane and not even mentioning selina kyle. from her short dialogue in the trailer she almost seems like the robin hood of gotham. I’m still wondering how Joseph Gordon-Levitt fits in and Marion Coltillard. I still think she’s gonna be talia al-ghoul.
