Back in October, we learned the exciting news that Christopher Nolan would be debuting the six-minute prologue from The Dark Knight Rises in front of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol on IMAX (starting December 16th). It was definitely great news, but then we heard that the prologue would only be shown at IMAX theaters housing a 70mm projector. Well, today that news has been confirmed and along with it comes a list of participating theaters. It’s neat that Warner Bros. is giving a peek at the film this early, but it’s unfortunate for those who live nowhere near a 70mm IMAX theater (especially given that many theater across the country have been converted to the digital format).
While I’d like to hope that Nolan and Co. will make the prologue available online or elsewhere, I wouldn’t bet on it. Included in the release of the theater list is a statement from Nolan touting the IMAX format specifically in 70mm. At least we’re getting a new trailer for the film in front of Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Hit the jump to find out if your theater makes the cut, and leap with joy or retreat in tears accordingly. The Dark Knight Rises opens July 20th, 2012.
Here’s the statement from Nolan, followed by the full list of theaters (via Nolan Fans):
“Our experience on The Dark Knight shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring. The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format. Giving the fans an early look at an IMAX sequence is a great way to draw attention to what I believe will be an incredible way to experience our story when it comes out next summer.” – Christopher Nolan

I swear…living in the armpit of the deep south…there aint jack diddly fershizzle near me. That sux!!! Guess I’ll hafta wait till somebody low jax it & hangs it online…that being said…
I have to be honest…armpit is a little to flattering to describe my region…butthole of the south is more like it.
Can’t wait to see the prologue. Love the possible synopsis.
Nice! I have three nearby cities to choose from: Miami, Tampa, and Orlando.
As exciting as this is, I don’t know if I want anything to spoil it for me. I prefer to go in as fresh as possible when it comes out next year. Hmmmmmm, tough decisions.
The one in Tampa is an IMAX Dome theater.
Anyone seen a feature film on an IMAX dome before? How does it compare to the traditional IMAX screen?
I prefer dome. It covers your full field of vision so you feel like you are in the scene.
Thanks a lot for posting this!
I’ll be at Lincoln Square watching Shame this weekend … It’s only about an hour away ! I’m in there December 16th!
well, no Philippines.
I know dude…. Badtrip!!
let’s still see GHOST PROTOCOL on IMAX. malay mo may milagro! kung hindi man, we still got a BRAD BIRD live action debut to watch, and some pretty cool IMAX camera shots.
Holy, Calgary makes the cut?! I’m so going to lineup for this!
Wow i thought San Diego would have at least one
I know right.. How can palm springs have 1 but not sd.
Not driving to LA for this sorry!
Sweet, Irvine Spectrum! Just around the corner from my place.
There is a mistake in the release it says that it’s at philadelphia tropicana IMAX theater, but it should say new jersey tropicana IMAX theater that theater is in Atlantic city, just a heads up.
Based on this, and my knowledge of Dallas IMAX theaters and the size of the Houston Marq*e, I think these are largely based on the size of the screen.
The Marq*e is by far the largest screen I have seen in my life in IMAX format. The Cinemark XD in Plano is close, but not quite there. Dallas doesn’t have any IMAX screen close to it. BALLS!
Is this a true prologue or just the first six minutes of the film like the bank sequence from TDK?
How you tempt me Nolan, but I’m going in fresh next Summer.
CANT WAITTTTT
Though it sucks that not everyone will get to see this, I get why it’s just the 70mm real IMAX and not the digital conversons. It’s not real IMAX, just a nice screen with a better than average sound system. Most of the digital Imax’s I’ve been in aren’t much better than a standard big screen. If the point is to show off the scenes shot with an IMAX camera, why would you show it in a different format?
Damn!! Wish they posted a list of the German IMAX theaters that will have the prologue…
Edmonton makes the cut! Waaaaaaaahoooooooooooooooooo! Where’s my industrial grade, good to -50 sleeping bag?
Christopher Nolan’s my nigga!
I have two (NY) that are 25 minutes from me…ahahahaha….
I live 10 minutes from one but I think I’ll wait for the summer and get the entire experience at once.
Oh how u tempt me Nolan, u tease! Think Ghost Protocol does look like a good movie but if i go see it, will be purely for the bat! To see the prolouge or to wait and go in fresh? decisions!
Providence, Rhode Island? Not Saint Louis, MO, but Providence? Damn you Ronnies for going digital!
What the hell?
The IMAX in Raleigh, NC is true IMAX with the 70mm projector, and we’re not going to get to see it.
Looks like I might be making a 5 1/2 hour trip to Chantilly, VA to see the prologue…
Supposedly the Wachovia IMAX Theater in Raleigh is showing the prologue with the M:I movie for the first 5 days. I don’t know why it’s not on this list so it’s kind of sketchy. I’m going to call and confirm a few days before, you should do the same.
Damn…First New Orleans gets snubbed in the filming for Pittsburgh, now we don’t even get the prologue, even though we have a cinema that shows 70mm IMAX…
Spokane Washington also has a 70mm IMAX Theater, but it doesn’t appear on the list. WTF! Man, I really hope they play here or I’ll have to travel over to Seattle to see it haha.
How is Atlanta, one of the 10 biggest metropolises in the country, not have a screening within several hundred miles?! This is ridiculous.
TORONTO RULES!!!
Got 2 of the theaters within a 15 drive from me.
Sooooo going to line up for this!
No Australia love?
I looked up the IMAX theatre in Sydney because I will be there with family over Christmas break, and they confirmed that the footage will play before every MI screening.
