20th Century Fox has revealed a new trailer for the upcoming X-Men movie Dark Phoenix. The film hails from writer/producer Simon Kinberg, who also makes his directorial debut on the 90s-set X-Men: Apocalypse follow-up. The sequel adapts the famous Dark Phoenix comics arc, with Sophie Turner filling the role of Jean Grey/Dark Phoenix while Jessica Chastain plays a mysterious (and perhaps otherworldly) character.

Right off, this trailer really wants us to think Jean kills Mystique, between the "why did you make me do that, she was my friend" line and the classic rain-drenched funeral shot that happens every time a comic book character dies. (Truth be told, I don't think Jennifer Lawrence would mind this development too much, either.) But I'm not sure that's the type of twist you give away in the trailer, so I'm deeming it Marketing Fuckery. [UPDATE: Uh, nevermind. Nothing matters!]

So what do we get? It feels like the hype is pretty low in the fandom-sphere for Dark Phoenix between the inconsistency of the franchise as a whole and this being the last X-Men film before Disney swallows 20th Century Fox. But I just don't think we can completely rule out any movie where Sophie Turner transforms into an outer-space death god. There's absolutely nothing we haven't already seen from an X-Men movie in this trailer—besides maybe Charles Xavier miraculously saying "There's still good in you, Jean" instead of "There's still good in you, Erik"—but for one last ride filled with sloppy, big-budget mutant madness? A celestial Sansa Stark absolutely merking a train full of goons isn't a terrible away to spend two hours.

Check out the new Dark Phoenix trailer below. The film also sees Michael Fassbender return as Magneto alongside Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Selene (Kota Eberhardt). Main players Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), and Cyclops (Tye Sheridan) return. Dark Phoenix arrives in theaters on June 7th.

Here's the official synopsis for Dark Phoenix:

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
