New Image from Tim Burton’s DARK SHADOWS Featuring Johnny Depp

While we’ve yet to see a trailer for Tim Burton’s adaptation of the cult TV series Dark Shadows, we’ve actually gotten a look at quite a few images from the pic. Today we’ve got a new look at the protagonist by way of a very pointy Johnny Depp. Depp plays a vampire who struggles to reintegrate with his descendants after having been buried for 200 years. Burton recently talked at length about the project’s tone and setting, calling it “a weird soap opera.” While the material is decidedly Burton-esque, I’m encouraged by the diverse cast and period setting. With this bevy of images at our disposal, hopefully a trailer is coming soon.

Hit the jump to check out the image. The film also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Moretz, Eva Green, Gulliver McGrath, Bella Heathcote, Ray Shirley, Jackie Earle Haley, and Jonny Lee Miller. Dark Shadows opens May 11th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Dark Shadows:

In the year 1752, Joshua and Naomi Collins, with young son Barnabas, set sail from Liverpool, England to start a new life in America. But even an ocean was not enough to escape the mysterious curse that has plagued their family. Two decades pass and Barnabas (Johnny Depp) has the world at his feet—or at least the town of Collinsport, Maine. The master of Collinwood Manor, Barnabas is rich, powerful and an inveterate playboy…until he makes the grave mistake of breaking the heart of Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). A witch, in every sense of the word, Angelique dooms him to a fate worse than death: turning him into a vampire, and then burying him alive.

Two centuries later, Barnabas is inadvertently freed from his tomb and emerges into the very changed world of 1972. He returns to Collinwood Manor to find that his once-grand estate has fallen into ruin. The dysfunctional remnants of the Collins family have fared little better, each harboring their own dark secrets. Matriarch Elizabeth Collins Stoddard (Michelle Pfeiffer) has called upon live-in psychiatrist, Dr. Julia Hoffman (Helena Bonham Carter), to help with her family troubles.

Also residing in the manor is Elizabeth’s ne’er-do-well brother, Roger Collins, (Jonny Lee Miller); her rebellious teenage daughter Carolyn Stoddard (Chloe Moretz); and Roger’s precocious 10-year-old son, David Collins (Gulliver McGrath). The mystery extends beyond the family, to caretaker Willie Loomis, played by Jackie Earle Haley, and David’s new nanny, Victoria Winters, played by Bella Heathcote.

I haven’t been interested in anything Burton’s done in quite some time but this sounds promising if it isn’t overly melodramatic. If it’s a little on the kookier side (a la Beetlejuice) it might be fun.

That’s because Burton and his style has been played out for sometime. He hasn’t been really relevant since the late 80′s / early 90′s, and he’s still stock on his grown man “goth” tendencies … it’s actually kind of pathetic. But hey, we’ll always have Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands. All his other films are “meh” at best.

“Weird soap opera” is probably pretty accurate, since that’s what the original was. Strange how much Depp’s Barnabas looks like Willy Wonka. But that haircut is straight out of the original.

I cannot believe no one is asking “where is Quinton Collins”? Growing up my sister & I we big fans. What is up with that?

Is this going to be a film or made into a tv series type of thing?
