Last week, we reported that director Darren Aronofsky was close to taking the helm of Wolverine 2.  Now, Deadline is reporting that the deal is so far along that they’re already planning to shoot the sound-stage portions in New York so that Aronofsky and Hugh Jackman don’t have to inconvenience their families.  However, once the shooting in New York is finished, the production will move to Japan (where the sequel is set) for the bulk of the filming.

Deadline also reports that shooting is scheduled to begin in March in order to allow Aronofsky time to do the necessary press and awards-season obligations that will come when his new movie, Black Swan, opens on December 3rd.  Hit the jump for a recap on what we know about Wolverine 2 thus far.

Details on the sequel are scarce but so far there’s been no word of adamantium memory bullets, so that’s a good sign.  The script is actually being handled by The Usual Suspects screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie.  Since the sequel is being set in Japan, it’s possible that McQuarrie is drawing from Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s 1979 arc that had Wolverine traveling to Japan and falling in love with Mariko Yashida whose father, Shingen Yashida was a Yakuza crime boss.  Shingen also had an illegitimate son, Keniuchio Harada, who was a mutant and came to be known as the Silver Samurai.

While I’m not crazy about Aronofsky using his talent on a sequel to a horrendously terrible movie, he’s one of the few people that could get me interested in another Wolverine film.  Also, I’m going to assume that the logic behind the decision is the “one-for-them, one-for-me” mentality that would give Aronofsky a larger budget for a more daring project on the condition that Wolverine 2 is a success. Since X-Men Origins: Wolverine raked in $373 million worldwide even though it’s pretty much unwatchable, I think Aronofsky should have a hit on his hands with the sequel.

    WHAT THE I DON’T EVEN?!?!?!?

Wolverine was one of the more disappointing movies I’ve seen. Not quite as disappointing as Spiderman 3. But still. What is?

    • Angmal

I disagree. At least Spider-Man 3 had Bruce Campbell in it being awesome like he always is. Wolverine was wall-to-wall shit.

    This should be very interesting.

Exactly! What is there to complain about? Come on, this isn’t really going to be a sequel to Origins at all. This isn’t a one-for-me, one-for-you deal. It comes with that perk, but Aronofsky is only ever going to do films that he feels he can bring something unique to. This is it! He isn’t going to sign on to a shit show if there isn’t something creatively appealing about it. Aronofsky is out to draw attention to his corner of the sandbox and raise some eyebrows. I think we’re in for a rich flick and a comic book movie with real gravitas.

        I agree completely!

No offense, but how is it that you know Aronofsky’s thoughts and motivations?

      • Bigfiction

I absolutely don’t and it wasn’t my intention to sound like I did. Clearly, I respect the guy as a director and storyteller, and it is precisely because of the artistic integrity I was sending up in the original comment. If there wasn’t a history of Aronofsky making really good decisions and great films, then I wouldn’t be stoked for this. I guess I’m just assuming he has similar ambitions to Nolan when he first took on Batman, and not that he is selling out and trying to make me suspicious of him.

Cant wait, i hope its rated R

I agree with every word you said. Let’s hope this ones a helluva lot better. The Japan arc is what most of us wanted in the first place.

come on, is this an actual sequel to wolverine? that terrible movie with memory erasing bullets?

Wolverine is often a very dark character so although I don’t like Aronfonsky’s pessimistic and nihilistic films, he may actually do something right with Wolverine.

More likely though he’ll just give us another sad ass boring film with bad action and a sad ending. He’s probably never read a comic in his life.

With him making a sequel he didn’t even have to read a comic, yipee!

Yeah, making up facts as we go, thats a new one!

It’s just such a bizarre pairing. I would never think Aronofsky would direct such a title. But you have to think, the japan story for wolverine is a totally different story then his x-men origins one. It has the ability to contain a lot of artistry and emotion. I just wonder if the action parts the studios and audience demand will be able to work well with it.

    EPIC WIN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I may have missed it but what’s your beef with Woverine 1? It didn’t seem that bad.

Seriously? It’s one of the worst movies ever made, and that’s just scientific fact.

And after this he’s going to be producing the next season of Jersey Shore.

I want to see aronofsky use his trademark cam-behind-back view where wolverine kick ass in a long take fight scene

Aronofsky’s a great choice, a new direction. Yes there’s a lot of room for improvement on the first Origins movie, probably because for a movie that was supposed to focus on Wolverine it spent far too much time introducing us to other chararacters we didn’t buy our tickets to see. Seriously, Gambit? And I suspect that had more to do with Fox’s plans for future spinoffs than anything else. I trust Aronofsky to create something that’s more than just a trailer for upcomming features – and as a fan I thank Jackman for doing whatever it took to making that happen.

    It’s probably going to suck.
