THE WIRE Creator Responds to Attorney General’s Request for Another Season, Tells U.S. Government to Do Their Job

     June 10, 2011

I’ve yet to see an episode of HBO’s The Wire. I know, I know, I’m a morally reprehensible human being. It’s high on my Netflix queue and I keep promising myself I’m going to start it soon. This is because The Wire‘s five season run on HBO has consistently been called the greatest television series ever made. That the Emmys have failed to award the show even once speaks volumes about their relevance (that, and they consider Entourage and Two And a Half Men to be comedies). Last week, Attorney General Eric Holder, a fan of the show, directed comments at the show’s creators saying “Do another season of The Wire…I want another season or a movie.” Well, creator David Simon’s response may surprise you. Hit the jump to see what he said.

Last week, Holden invited some cast members from The Wire to Washington in order to take part in an announcement about an anti-drug campaign he’s currently running. He directed his attention to the creators specifically, saying:

“I want to speak directly to [Co-creator Ed] Burns and Mr. Simon: Do another season of The Wire. That’s actually at a minimum. … If you don’t do a season, do a movie.  We’ve done HBO movies, this is a series that deserves a movie. I want another season or I want a movie. I have a lot of power Mr. Burns and Mr. Simon.”

Simon responded thusly (The Atlantic Wire via SlashFilm):

“The Attorney-General’s kind remarks are noted and appreciated. I’ve spoken to Ed Burns and we are prepared to go to work on season six of The Wire if the Department of Justice is equally ready to reconsider and address its continuing prosecution of our misguided, destructive and dehumanising drug prohibition.”

Game, set, match. I guess Holder forgot that the creator of an insanely smart series focusing on drug trade, government and bureaucracy, and the media in Baltimore probably knows his shit. Now, I guess it’s time to move The Wire to the top of my queue.

I am the biggest supporter of The Wire, possibly ever. The show, however, does not need another season. As much as I love it, talk about it, press people to watch it, etc. I just can’t imagine the series starting up again after the absolutely perfect series finale.

It really is the most rich and rewarding television series of all time.

You should be ashamed that you have yet to even watch a single episode.

That must have cut pretty deep, Holder probably jacks off to the wire.

How typical of this utterly incompetent and inept U.S. administration to waste time on silly things like television shows. Holder is without a doubt the single worst and most ideologically-driven Attorney General since Ramsey Clark- and that’s saying something! If making a new series or movie of ‘The Wire’ means Holder, Obama, and their REAL master George Soros stop the disgraceful investigations into the brave men and women who kept America safe by interrogating terrorists the way they should be, then roll on a new series or movie. Or better still, just leave the CIA alone to do their job right and Mr Holder can go work for Soros and his cronies… roll on November 2012…

By FAR the best scene in the Wire ever.

When people told me The Wire was the best series ever, I scoffed. But after watching it, I agree. Pro tip: watch it with subtitles on or you’ll miss half the dialog.

Attention, “Gerry Mander”: you know nothing at all about the things you care most passionately about – and that’s got to sting!

David Simon has just proven himself to be an idiot. Drugs themselves are dehumanizing. America has a serious drug problem NOW, with the laws we have in place. Making them “legal” won’t magically cause those unfortunate enough to have a drug problem to skip into a rehabilitation program. People under the influence of drugs will do anything to avoid having to stop.
