Fox Shifts DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Release Date to FAST & FURIOUS 7 Slot

20th Century Fox has moved up the release date of the Matt Reeves-directed sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, as the film will now open on July 11, 2014 instead of July 18th.  The July 11th date is currently home to Fast & Furious 7, but the sad passing of star Paul Walker in the midst of production has put the future of the project in a state of limbo for the time being.  With filming on an indefinite hiatus, Universal is considering a number of options regarding how best to move forward, but it’s becoming increasingly clear that FF7 is not likely to make its intended release date—it was always a tight turnaround anyway.

Universal has not officially announced a release date change for Fast & Furious 7 just yet, but the shifting of the Apes release date suggests that Fox seems to think that will happen sooner or later.  The follow-up stars Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, and Keri Russell and takes place 15 years after the events of the first film.

I’m sure they’ll still try to get Fast 7 out sooner rather than later. With this buzz around Walker’s death, as awful as it sounds even as I write this, the studio will probably take advantage of it.

This is a horrible and sad situation all round but that really seems distasteful by Fox.

Fox probably heard word down the grapevine that Universal would move the film off summer 2014, and probably out of the year altogether. Hence the move. (And WB will likely move “Jupiter Ascending” up to the date Fox vacated.)

Studios do this all the time. When WB yanked “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” off November 21, 2008 and to July 15, 2009 — rivals quickly took advantage of the empty slot.

It may seem distasteful, but it’s usual Hollywood moves.

Well that’s just a wee bit heartless. In other news, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was absolutely brilliant, and I could not be looking forward to this movie more. I mean, Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, and GARY OLDMAN? Count me in!
