Many were skeptical of 2011’s franchise reboot/prequel Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but the film actually turned out to be a smart, fun, and fascinating summer sci-fi blockbuster. By starting at the beginning, 20th Century Fox promised an intriguing series of films that would trace the beginnings of the apes uprising—something we haven’t yet seen on film—and so anticipation has been high for the follow-up, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) takes over the franchise with the latest installment, picking up 10 years after the events of Rupert Wyatt’s first film.
The pic had its world premiere last night, and the response from those in attendance has been very, very good, with many calling it one of the best films of the summer, if not the year. After the jump, we’ve rounded up some of the Twitter responses to Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The film opens in theaters on July 11th. I really liked RISE, but I think DAWN is WAAAAY better. The ape stuff alone is complex, emotional and totally cool.
