20th Century Fox has released a new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer, but it’s not really a traditional trailer.  Instead, this video fills audiences in on what transpired between the events of 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and this sequel, which takes place 10 years later.  The trailer’s actually quite neat, as it follows how the Simian Flu from the end of Rise nearly wipes out humanity’s existence, tracking our response to the virus.  By skipping ahead a considerable amount of time, director Matt Reeves is given the freedom to really ramp up the tension in this follow-up, and all the footage we’ve seen thus far has been fantastic.  After X-Men: Days of Future PastHow to Train Your Dragon 2 and 22 Jump Street, could this be the summer of sequels that are actually good?

Hit the jump to watch the new Dawn of the Planet of the Apes trailer.  The film stars Jason Clarke, Andy Serkis, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Judy Greer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Tobey Kebbell, Kirk Acevedo, and Enrique MurcianoDawn of the Planet of the Apes opens in theaters on July 11th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Dawn of the Planet of the Apes:

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Same, looks awesome. This and Edge of Tomorrow were top of my list. Edge was great, fingers crossed for this now.

      • Spanky

He said HAMBURGER, not a pile of sh!t in a box

  • Marisa

I avoided the first film because I HATE James Franco but I’ll be watching it this weekend because I really want to see the sequel.

    • The Destroyer

James Franco was surprisingly tolerable in it, but Andy Serkis is the real star, and is amazing.

    • Liderc

You would be totally surprised by how good Franco was in the first movie, I’m actually bummed he won’t be in the second.

      He’s was good, promise.

      • Marisa

I have heard that he’s good in it, I’ve had several friends point this out. It’s not often that what/how an actor/actress acts in their social/private life affects how I view them in movies but I can barely watch anything he’s in without seeing him as himself and it just normally takes me out any scene he’s in. Happened for Oz the Great and Powerful, This is the End and Spring Breakers for me and I wanted to punch the screen for most of Spring Breakers whenever he was on.

I really want to see the new film for Andy Serkis and Jason Clarke(who I have a weird crush on) and because the story looks so good. Seems like they took a really cheesy old scifi movie series and made an actual plausible working story for how it might have happened.

      • Isaac Jamil

Maybe he’s in a cameo near the end, I hope so.

    • John

James, I love you. Marisa is fat, don’t listen to her.

  • Neo Racer

Apparently the apes are good at making stencils/spray can art!

  • The Flobbit

I’ve said this before and I will say it again: Andy Serkis is a beast of an actor!

  • The Flobbit

Wow. This looks surprisingly prescient and scary. I can picture this happening (not the rogue monkeys ruling the world), but the horrible collapse of society.

    • Ruprect

It would only take a virus that would literally decimate the population (1 person in 10 dying) to make it happen. Kinda scary.

  • dude

See I don’t wanna know this. I don’t wanna know anything else about this movie. I am just ready to see the actual thing now.

This was really entertaining, lots of backstory on Koba which is heartbreaking and TONS of filling in the blanks from immediately after the end of RISE chronicling the fall of humanity after the spread of the epidemic “Simian Flu”. It’s a ripping yarn!

FYI: This is pretty much the subject matter of the novel tie-in, FIRESTORM, that’s already on bookshelves today. (I was granted an advance copy from the publisher a few weeks ago and read it; it’s actually quite good.)

  • DEADP00L

How Godzillaish which is awesome and how ironic that Obama is the presiding president when everything gets out of hand, screwed up and the world ends. Does he think this is going to help his approval rating because I suspect it’s going to have the opposite effect.

    • Guest

What on earth are you even talking about? Do you think Obama even knows he is in this trailer? Wait…

Do you ACTUALLY think Obama took time out of his day to record a 3 second clip for a Plant of the Apes trailer? Is that really it? HOLY CRAP THAT’S HILARIOUS! Also, are you blaming obama for handing the world over to Apes? You know it’s the entire world and not just the US, right?

      • DEADP00L

Yes I do actually. When he’s not golfing he has a tendency of sending
his wife to do shows or he himself poping up every now and again to a
show or two – so a second cameo wouldn’t be hard for him.

Didn’t you hear? Apparently America is the police of the world, Detroit gets bankrupt nobody gives a crap in Washington but when Iraq implodes suddenly we’re all ‘outraged’ and considering airstrikes.

Seriously, he did not need to be in that clip.

      • Atlasshruggedmyass

You are a idiot plain and simple. In case you forgot republicans were the ones who supported detroit going bankrupt and obama was the one who supported ending the war in Iraq. Get your facts strait.

      • DEADP00L

He bails out banks and Cars but leaves an entire city to rot yeah he had no say whatsoever. He’s only the executive of the Government.

      • Clarence Boddicker

Goddamit enough. They are including Obama to make it more timely and prescient you goofball.
You consistently make stupid, lazy comments on here while bearing the moniker and likeness of a character whom I love and appreciate dearly. At least have the decency to change those particulars if you’re going to be this dumb.

      • DEADP00L

Oh boo boo if I had only known I would have ruined your life sooner.

Having Obama in the clip was ironic whether you want to acknowledge that or not.

  • NICK НΛRT

this isnt a new trailer, its a viral video to promote the final trailer which comes out in a few days

  • LEM

I thought that the viral outbreak was obviously foreshadowed near the end of the first movie but Hollywood seems to think we need to be hit over the head with something before we get it.

  • Colin Christian

    Bring it on.

  • jello

the scariest part of this video is when the internet stopped working…. i can’t even imagine…

  • Marissa Evans

Probably my most anticipated movie of the summer if not the year.

  • Ethan

    Is this considered spoilers?

  • grapes9h5

    Great stuff

  • Frank

Very smart way into the story. Kudos to the writers.
