First Trailer for DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES Starring Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, and Gary Oldman

20th Century Fox has released the first trailer for director Matt Reeves’ (Let Me In) sequel Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.  The story takes place 15 years after the first film and finds Caesar (Andy Serkis) attempting to assert his dominance over the apes while a small human colony struggles to survive in San Francisco.  The trailer doesn’t really go into all of that, but instead establishes a much darker tone than Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and rightly so.  This is a post-apocalypse, and the teaser gives a good sense of what Reeves is going for.  If you’re looking for a lot of Caesar, you won’t find it because there’s still plenty of effects work left to do.

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier.  They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

    How the hell does Andy Serkis not have at least one Oscar? If his performance in The Two Towers wasn’t brilliant, then I don’t know what IS. His King Kong was a bright spot in a bloated but stunning movie, and his performance as Caesar was nothing short of electrifying.

    Give this guy an Oscar already!

      Because his performance is a guide, an outline. It is completed by the effects artists, who render the creature remarkable. For instance, if Serkis, a human being, does Caesar’s expression at the end of the trailer it carries little weight or resonance. The power comes from the connotations of this rival species taking our world and casting us in the shade. It is effective because we recognise a very unsettling threat, something Serkis could never convey as well.

      Serkis is not an ape, therefore his can never be as effective a performance on its own as it is once the character is applied over the top of him.

      He gives people something to work with, not the finished product.

        Not sure I completely agree. That is a bit like saying that a person under make-up prosthetics could never win an Oscar because he’s wearing another artist’s work on his face. Film making is a combined effort. How many great acting performances were helped or enhanced by make-up, wardrobe, lighting, or music? Do we discredit their performances as well?

        Motion capture performances will never be recognised, nor should they be. Its impure in the sense that what is captured on the day is altered so significantly to achieve the desired result it is no longer the work of the actor, but the special effects artist. They’re the one who provide the impact. They’re the ones who take what he does on set and mould it into the finished product.

        It’s a nice idea, it is, but Serkis doesn’t deserve nominations for these performances.

        You didn’t address my point. John Hurt was nominated for his role in The Elephant Man and there was virtually nothing recognizable about John Hurt on screen. It was all make up and performance.

        Motion capture requires that an artist apply a CG “suit”, if you will, over the actor. The CG artist, however, does not significantly alter the performance of the character. There are types of animation, such as the kind used in video games that does indeed alter the performance drastically from what was originally intended. Serkis’ performances are not in that category.

        So, I stand by statement. He deserves to be recognized for his work.

        Nej. John Hurt’s humanity, voice, diction, line choices etc, every thing that an actor does to make or break their performances were his and his alone. With kong and apes Serkis has no lines, he doesn’t deliver a real performance.

        He provides the physical framework which the artist then uses or doesnt to bring the performance to life. That’s the key for me, it’s someone else’s job to produce the finished article.

        Now Gollum… Well, yes he talks, and does a fine job of it, but essentially its a voice acting gig. Just because he really gets into it and is rolling around on the floor… Its flashy, its different, that’s why people like it.

        How can the academy or whoever be sure how much of Serkis’ performance on the day was transferred verbatim, if you will, into the final cut? How do they know who did the lions share of the work to realise the character? So much of the impact lie in what happens after serkis is done

        You don’t know the first thing about acting. Having taken acting courses in the past and acted on-stage, I’ll say that it’s every bit of Serkis’ acting ability which brings these characters to life and hence nomination worthy.

        Ever seen serkis in something where his performance isn’t changed wholesale on a computer? You wonder how he gets gigs in the first place. Hence, the strength of all these similar roles is just how good the conversion from shoot to post is.

        If Serkis can make us believe that Caesar is a real character through his movements, and nuances of emotion in his face, I don’t see why that shouldn’t get him recognition. I don’t think Serkis’ performance in the first ‘Apes’ worked solely because we should have been afraid of apes becoming smart and taking over. It worked because he captured the movements of a chimpanzee so well, ON TOP of making us believe that chimpanzee had near human intellect. That’s why Serkis deserves at least a nomination. The VFX teams do amazing things to make Serkis’ performance LOOK like an ape, but everything Serkis does is his own, and that is what sells the character.

        I think you’re missing the point that it is, in fact, Serkis’ performance at the end of that trailer that the VFX team uses as a template, they don’t just make up facial movements on their own. They essentially skin Serkis’ performance with the Caesar art. It is a combined effort, but the VFX, no matter how good, could never come up with those movements on their own.

        This comes up in a section of the fan community every time Serkis does this. Gollum, Kong, Caesar… Essentially he gives the other actors something to play off and react to. In addition, he gives the sfx guys the outline of a performance which they can then fill in. That’s what I consider the greatest advantage of this.

        Watch the raw footage of him on set. There is nothing oscar or award worthy about it.

        Actually there is – his capturing of the two schizophrenic sides of Smeagol, the rage and tenderness of a giant ape, and the anger bubbling beneath the surface of a complex chimpanzee – are all visible and memorable even when he is still in his mo cap suit. It is simply enhanced when his movements are digitized and his character rendered.

        As soon as someone mentions his ‘performance’ in kong as some measure of how great an actor he is you’re point of view is immediately invalidated.

        Seriously, there was nothing noteworthy about that bloated, self indulgent mess of a film. Least of all a man wearing a tracking suit jumping around pretending to be an ape.

        I disagree. Ebert gave the movie four full stars, saying “”King Kong” is a magnificent entertainment. It is like the flowering of all the possibilities in the original classic film. Computers are used not merely to create special effects, but also to create style and beauty….And the characters are not cardboard heroes or villains seen in stark outline, but quirky individuals with personalities….This is one of the year’s best films.”

        It was a tremendous technical achievement (disastrous bronto chase aside), with a great cast, a great atmosphere, and a magnificent sense of spectacle. Andy’s Kong made a giant ape sympathetic and believable.

        Name one other actor who could play an ape like him. Tim Roth?

        The film was a shitbomb. It looked terrific from a design point of view, but my god was it intolerable at times.

        The relationship between Jamie Bell and the first mate? Philosophically musing about Conrad and Heart of Darkness? Cut.

        Having some weird sort of quasi romantic relationship between kong and ann? Cut. Should have been a chase film. The arrive to capture him, he takes ann because he wouldn’t mind a snack, they get her back and take him down, take him to New York where we rinse and repeat. Kong was the villain, not some sympathetic poor ape who lost his family and just wants friends.

        The film was easily 40 minutes too long. To me its indicative of the big budget malaise that hit film this past decade. There’s no need to cram your film full of disjointed, overbearing ideas. Tell a simple story well and that’s all you need to do.

    Looks awesome! Why is that some studios can pump $100M of dollars into their films and the CGI still looks bad (Green Lantern) and Rise of the Planet of the Apes had a budget of $93M and looks amazing? At this point all effects teams should be striving to reach the level that this team has put together. WETA is definatley surpassing ILM in the effects department.

      The reason Weta trumps ILM everytime, is because Weta uses practical effects, sets, and costumes wherever possible, also utilizing traditional makeup guys in building their computer programs to ensure that the textures look as real as possible.

      Clearly ineffective against the sheer number of apes… There are guns in the trailer, so obviously nothing “happened” to them

        We obviously got so sick we forgot how to fight a war as though we were in at least the 19th century.

        They’d have just carpet bombed the redwoods. That’s it, it’s over, we’ve won.

        There weren’t that many apes to begin with, and even after 10 years they’d surely not have reproduced in such numbers that they outnumber us… You know what, I really enjoyed the first one and I’m looking forward to this, I’ll stop picking at what is a nice sci-FI fantasy premise.

    Looks awesome, the first one was a surprise and I enjoyed it immensely. The tone for this looks a lot different but that’s to be expected, looks a lot darker. That trailer did a great job and the effects on Caesar and the other apes is incredible, well done Weta. “I need to speak to Caesar” gave me chills.
