Robert De Niro, Diane Keaton, Katherine Heigl, and Amanda Seyfried are set to star in the indie comedy Gently Down the Stream for writer-director Justin Zackham (The Bucket List).  According to Variety, “De Niro and Keaton play a long-divorced couple who, for the sake of their adopted son’s wedding and his biological mother, pretend they are still married. They quickly learn that acting the part isn’t easy, especially when their past, present and future unravel for all to see.”  While all these actors have done good work (and in De Niro and Keaton’s case, unforgettable work) in the past, these days the presence of De Niro and Heigl is like putting a giant “Warning: This Movie Will Likely Be Terrible” sign on the poster.  You can dismiss my negativity, but how many terrible films do you need to see them in before you say “I see a disturbing pattern developing.”

But hey, maybe this will break the streak.  Now Lucy, get ready for me to kick that football.  Production begins this July in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Katherine Heigl and Amanda Seyfried are lovely, gorgeous, stunning and beautiful.

And they can’t out act a beanbag chair.

While Heigl’s films have not been brilliant (Knocked Up apart) they were all certainly decent and way better than much of the press reported. There has been a press hate on her for some time – much of it unwarranted (some of it self inflicted) and she has operated in a genre that movie critics hate: the romantic comedy. But I think you are being unfair.

Seyfried and Keaton haven’t exactly blown anyone out of the water recently, either. Seyfried’s got Jennifer’s Body, Red Riding Hood, and Dear John floating over her head. Keaton did okay with Morning Glory last year, but Mad Money, Because I Said So, and Smother (straight to DVD!) are not exactly crowning jewels of achievement as of late, either. I think that that warning label could belong to any of them at this point, if you insist on attaching it in the first place. If your going to call it like you see it, make sure your calling out everyone.

You can in no way compare DeNiro to Heigel. One has proved himself and can sit on his laurels, the other acussed the film that made her of being sexist which she’s Probaly a difficult primadonna who doesn’t care much about artistic merit. Many great actors failed to find projects in their twilight years to match their greatness, Toshiro Mifune comes to mind, but when your old and you have dozens of classic performances under your belt that’s different than being a new actor who has achieved nothing at all other than being Seth Rogan’s foil.
I think anyone who loves film owes Robert DeNiro more respect than that.
