20^th Century Fox continued their Comic-Con presentation in Hall H by bringing in the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool. After an excellent teaser video from the title character, Ryan Reynolds appeared on the stage to thank a certain fan for leaking Deadpool test footage, which catalyzed the production of the film. Director Tim Miller joined them next, along with Morena Baccarin, T.J. Miller, Brianna Hildebrand, Ed Skrein, and Gina Carano.

Panel Highlights

• Tim Miller and Reynolds thank the fans again for their commitment to the character, which was instrumental in getting 20^th Century Fox to make the movie, especially an R-rated one.

• Reynolds: “No matter what the rating though, babies will love this.”

• Baccarin calls her role badass. “She gives him lip right back … and not necessarily the talking kind.”

• T.J. Miller: “You’re gonna fuckin’ love this movie!”

• 

  Skrein reveals that his character Ajax was partially responsible for giving Deadpool his superpowers, but for some reason he’s not very grateful for the opportunity.

• Carano: “Angel Dust has some anger issues.”

• Tim Miller found himself unable to stop the constant riffing on set, but if the panel is any indication than the cast managed to click without issue.

• Reynolds: “[Tim] Miller cries like a baby when he sees unbridled rage.” Reynolds takes his director to task for getting emotional over certain scenes, just another example of how well this cast and crew seems to get along.

• T.J. Miller got involved with a rewrite on set and wrote some of the meanest jokes.

• Reynolds said that everything we love in the Deadpool comics will be part of his version of the character and calls it “the most faithful adaptation … he’s ever seen.”

• There’s a shout-out to Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick as Tim Miller calls it the best script he’s ever read (and gets choked up again).

• A bit more special footage is shown to the audience (and shown a second time when the crowd demands it) which confirms the presence of Colossus.

In a special message, Reynolds (in full Deadpool costume) greeted the folks of Hall H with a video that started with the iconic, “In a world, divided…” As Deadpool asks the question we’ve all been wondering (ie Why did Fox sew Deadpool’s lips shut?), he breaks through the fourth wall in the first of what will likely be many, many times. It’s a brief tease but it’s as if it was pulled right from the pages of a comic book, especially when Deadpool is revealed to be lounging in a leather chair, attempting to smoke a pipe before it falls out of his mask-covered mouth. A perfect taste of the film’s tone.

There’s also an incredible first look at an extended trailer for the film, which was the above-mentioned footage shown twice due to thunderous demand. It starts off rather unassuming with Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and his girlfriend (Baccarin) sharing an embrace; it seems that Wilson is stricken with cancer throughout his body and he’s looking for a cure. Enter a somewhat shady criminal organization whose members Ajax and Angel Dust give Wilson the opportunity of a lifetime, to not only be cancer-free but to gain superpowers.

Wilson takes this news with Deadpool’s usual sarcastic humor, agreeing to undergo the treatment as long as they don’t give him a green suit or computer-generated outfit, just a hint of the humor that is to come. Soon, Deadpool is revealed in full as he sits atop a highway overpass in his compete uniform, busily using crayons to draw an image of him assassinating a criminal. It’s not long until we see Deadpool in action, dropping straight into a moving vehicle and unleashing havoc on the highway. A massive gunfight breaks out in which Deadpool deals out death and one-liners in equal measure.

From here on out, it’s a blur of jokes, incredible action, laugh-a-minute dialogue, and plenty of sight gags. There’s a Stan Lee cameo (as the MC of a strip club), bar fights, a nod to Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld, and so much more. It’s “blink and you’ll miss it” for most of the jokes (especially those traded between a scarred-up Wilson and his friend Ajax Weasel (T.J. Miller); no wonder the entire crowd wanted to see it just one more time.
