Marvel Studios has put out an offer to director Robert Rodriguez (Planet Terror) to helm their upcoming super-antihero flick Deadpool starring Ryan Reynolds. According to Production Weekly [via The Playlist]. Apparently, 20th Century Fox is happy with the work he’s being doing on Machete and Predators, the latter of which he produced. The studio offered him the upcoming Planet of the Apes prequel, Rise of the Apes, but he passed. He’s also got his own film, Nervewrackers, on his plate.
Hit the jump for more on Deadpool. Predators, directed by Nimrod Antal, hits theaters on July 9th. Machete opens on September 3rd.
The Deadpool movie is technically a spin-off of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but it will (thankfully) act as if that movie never happened beyond bringing Ryan Reynolds back as the wise-cracking, psychopathic killer. The script is being penned by Zombieland writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. They’ve said that they’ll stay true to the mythology of the character. I assume that means they’ll have the character break the fourth-wall as he does in the comics.

planet terror is one of my favourite movies, so i have faith in rodriguez!
Would love to see this happen, but wouldn't Rodriguez have to be a Director's Guild member for this kind of studio project?

i dont think it will happen dude has Spy Kids 4 shooting in 2 months then the year long post then Fire And Ice it would be badass to see him do this but i dont think he will do this i would love to see him start work on nerverwrackers again
yah i think your right but is it just me or would quentin tarantino be the best choice as a director
C'mon Rodriguez. It's about time you tackle a comic-book property. The guy does great work and with the writers from Zombieland I can't help but be anxious for confirmation that he will direct this film.
for real this would be awesome. and i think reynolds was cool as deadpool but i kinda think bradley cooper could pull him off too

Fox owns the x men characters movie rights. marvel studios is a completely different entity owned by disney. thats pretty common knowledge dude. i mean, it's kind of your job to know these things isn't it?
this would be so PERFECT. I've been banging the “rodriguez for deadpool” drum for about 3 years now.
after the shxt he said about AZ this will kill the movie for a lot of fans, no to rodriguez, give it to joss whedon
