We're only a few measly months away from the release date for 20th Century Fox's Deadpool, and unlike some other movies I could mention (involving wars amongst the stars), the marketing has thus far been ingenious and often genuinely funny. And the same goes for its latest bit of advertising for the Marvel adaptation, a new international poster for the film featuring Ryan Reynolds in his Merc with a Mouth garb, getting a handful of his own, er, buns. "Bad Ass. Smart Ass. Great Ass." reads the poster's text and, well, its hard to argue with such assertions.

The film is coming at a great time for both Marvel Comics and Reynolds. The former had its most artistically encouraging years thus far at the movies with 2015, with Ant-Man, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil all pushing the brand into stylish, personal, and boldly political terrain. And as far as just straight-laced superhero movies go, Avengers: Age of Ultron was consistently entertaining. As for Reynolds, the longtime character actor proved a more-than-capable dramatic partner to the brilliant Ben Mendelsohn in Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden's lively, engrossing Mississippi Grind, a startling return to form for the directing team behind minor miracles like Half Nelson and Sugar.

Not for nothing did he also have the chops to stand alongside Helen Mirren in Woman in Gold, even though the film itself was the worst kind of just-add-cameras historical drama; he also added some much-needed charm to the otherwise vile Self/less. Deadpool, as directed by first-timer Tim Miller, will see him matching wits against the likes of Homeland's Morena Baccarin and Silicon Valley's T.J. Miller, who may not be on the same level as Mirren and Mendelsohn but nevertheless will give Reynolds a chance to show yet another side of his persona as a performer.
