Watch: DEADPOOL Test Footage Featuring Ryan Reynolds

     July 28, 2014

The R-rated superhero movie is kind of the Holy Grail nowadays, with the superhero genre at the height of its popularity.  As studios aim to find new ways of adapting the various comic book properties, fans are eager to see one of the big dogs—Marvel Studios, Warner Bros./DC, and 20th Century Fox—take a leap of faith and greenlight a more adult-geared adaptation.  One such property that was essentially made to break down this barrier is Deadpool, and Fox has been developing an adaptation of the comic for some time with Ryan Reynolds attached to star.  The key is finding the right budget to justify an R-rating, which excludes a hefty portion of the traditional target demo for comic book movies.  Tim Miller was most recently attached to direct, and he put together a reel of test footage to show executives what a Deadpool movie look like.  That footage has leaked online, and it’s kind of fantastic.  Reynolds feels perfect for the role, and the tone is spot on.

Hit the jump to watch the Deadpool test footage before it’s taken down.

A bit of background on the status of Deadpool: a script has been written for a while now by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, and those who’ve read it (Reynolds included) have had nothing but great things to say.  Again, Fox is in control of the property and continues to develop, but while producers like Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg are open to the possibility of an R-rated comic book movie, they always reiterate that it’s a tough gamble.

I’ve always been keen on seeing Deadpool come to fruition, but this leaked test footage has me significantly more jazzed about seeing this thing get made.  It’s funny, irreverent, and the direct address—which is another risky aspect of the project—works extremely well.  Here’s hoping it happens sooner rather than later, and with Reynolds in tow.

Yess!!! Please make this happen. Reynolds needs a break and this role is perfect for him. Give the film $40M budget and hire a big name actor to play either the villian to give it recognition (shit Tom Hanks wants a villianous role in a comic book film and here is there chance to make it happen).

    • Doug_101

Just picturing Tom Hanks in a Deadpool movie….that would be pretty amazing. Now I HAVE to see that happen.

  • anthonyg1500

If it gets made I hope theres a scene where he grabs the camera and uses it to bash someone’s head in

  • Vulcan

That was amazing. I’d pay a lot of money to see that.

  • chosen1

Oh man, that looks cool. I’m not much of a comic enthusiast but even from an outsider’s perspective this still looks incredible. Reynolds’ sass is hilarious.

  • scurvy

This was CGI right? Couldn’t tell in my phone. I think it might work better CGI.

    • O.G. Loc

It is. Have in mind this was filmed a couple of years ago.
I really hope they make this movie. I read the script, and it’s perfect for Deadpool.

  • Stefan Bonomo

Getting to hear Reynolds finally play Deadpool was a treat. He fits this perfectly. Though I’m wondering if Deadpool in this was CG or someone in a costume. Either way, it looked really cool. Now just pleaseeeeee give us the movie…

    • PepsiEnthusiast

Allegedly, this clip is Reynolds’s mo-cap.

      • Stefan Bonomo

Getting another look, I can tell most of this is CG. And considering it was directing by a special effects artist and done by one of my favourite effect studios, Blur Studios, now I understand why it looks really good.

  • MCP

Hellz yes! I’d watch this! Anyone know what it says on the piece of paper towards the end?? It’s all fuzzy.

  • GrimReaper07

I’ve got mixed feelings. The humor was good at times, but also occasionally annoying and lame.

  • Joseph M

He was a bit Robin Williams on speed. I really liked that from-ride-to-fire motorcycle stunt.

    • Falco

Hell yes! Reminds me of the equally as bad-ass stunt from Avengers when Fury jumps and rolls into action from the falling helicopter.

  • 80sRobot

I’ve always thought this would be the obvious Deadpool movie screenplay: Wade Williams has to fight 100 clones of himself… several of which are grotesque. (This would also explain how Wolverine Origins would fit in terms of continuity, though such a screenplay wouldn’t need to directly address this.)

And at some point, the narrative breaks the fourth wall: Like, Wade invades Comic Con, sits on a panel and verbally, then physically attacks naysaying fans who have doubts about the very movie they are watching. Wade goes on a rampage against Reynolds, who is a clone of himself. Supposedly. So it becomes Wade vs. actor Ryan Reynolds.

    • Pernell Whitaker

I hope not. That sounds terrible.

    • Luis Humberto

I read the leaked script and isn’t like you think.

  • Pernell Whitaker

Already blocked by Fox!! Bastards. Wont make the movie or at least let me see test footage.

  • Snarky

That did not take long at all to be removed.

  • Pernell Whitaker

Yes it looks really good, Reynolds is perfect for this… Can see it on youtube here:

  • Neo Racer

Yes so the footage is completely gone from Youtube…

“excludes a hefty portion of the traditional target demo for comic book movies”- what are they talking about? who do they think reads comics, especially deadpool? The only reason kids go to comic movies is BECAUSE OF THEIR PARENTS! I’m pretty sure the “target demo” should be the adults who buy and have been reading comics all these years in the first place! Besides we all know adults buy as much movie/comic merch as kids do, plus we’re willing and able to shell out more than the average 6/yo…

  • M W

What does the note say? Couldn’t read it.

    • Strong Enough

      Your mom’s best friend, Deadpool

  • Bomtronathon

It’s the role RR was born to play and I’m saying that as one who doesn’t care much him.

    • Aquartertoseven

I was surprised how he sounded, very Nolan North, very Deadpool.

  • fechu1922

if they release this movie it’s gonna be like mortal kombat in the 90′s. Every parent was against it but everybody played and buyed it. Especially becouse it was ultra violent. That made it sell more.

  • LSky

It would be stupid for them to make this with an R rating, cause they would be alienating half of the audience for movies like this.

    • Pernell Whitaker

  • scheebles

“There’s no easy way to say this: I’m pregnant, Trevor.”

  • Verbal Kent

    NO to Deadpool…. NO!

    • Jack Dennis

fox owns deadpool and x men, not disney.

      • Verbal Kent

        There, fixed it.

      • Vulcan

Fox doesn’t own Touchstone, that’s Disney.

      • Jack Dennis

whats your problem with a deadpool movie?

      • Verbal Kent

Whiny couch critic are my problem. DP is cool.

      • Jack Dennis

huh? you might wanna edit your comments so people can make sense of what you’re saying.although what you’re trying to say is probably of no importance to anyone.

      • Verbal Kent

Why you snarky, poorly structured sentence writing d!cktip. Don’t test me.

      • Jack Dennis

ooooo rephrasing what i pretty much d!cktip?really?im so scared of someone thats as strong as superman , BUT WITH HIS WORDS NONE THE LESS!

god fox is is soooooo dumb for not making this already. do they really think this wouldn’t at least make a hundred million? and i say at least.this could be made for 30 to 40 million.

  • andi

Felt like a darker version of Jim Carrey in The Mask.

  • DEADP00L

I was going for a more ‘welcome to the jungle’ kind of approach, with some random titties posters in the background but I decided to prove just a few points…

I can go bloodless (relatively XD), with not even ONE Bayplotion – and still break the fourth wall.

    Bite me studios!!!!

  • DEADP00L

Oh I am in so much love with – me.

  • Anthony Michael

For those interested, the script is easily found online, and Reynolds has acknowledged that that script is real.

    • Jack Dennis

they will most likely do some heavy rewrites on the script to bring continuity to the series.

  • Bifash

No mention in the article that the test footage is cgi with Reynolds merely contributing the voice for the character.

Link still up at Vulture, looks funny, they should commit before Reynolds gives up, I think he’s a good fit

  • Mikal

That was awesome. I can only hope it gets made.

  • Strong Enough

I see Tim Miller is putting his VFX skills to work on that footage

  • rhizomeman

Was that good? I was bored senseless – not funny, and there is no tension or excitement. The silly talking dilutes all sense of danger.

    • DEADP00L

      Bayformer alert!

Too much talking not enough crashing…*snort*

To clarify for everyone, from what I was told, it was CGI because its just a pre screener for exec’s, a live adaptation pre screener for the studio would have cost alot more money. This clip is merely to show the studio exec’s what a deadpool movie could potentially look like.

  • Yurine

I’d love to see a Deadpool movie.
