Last night, the rest of the world got a look at the Deadpool red-band trailer that played at Comic-Con along with the slightly tamer green-band trailer. It’s a promising debut for the title character (played by Ryan Reynolds) and showcased the blend of hard-R action and comedy director Tim Miller is going for.

But it turns out the trailer had more than some good jokes and brutal kills. It also tells us a lot about the movie, and Miller spoke with Empire to explain the chronology of what was contained and what we can expect from the movie:

  • The movie “will flash backwards and forwards in time throughout,” so the scene between Wade (Reynolds) post-surgery and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin) doesn’t necessarily kick off the movie. It takes place about 20 minutes in, and before Wade meets Vanessa, he’s a small-time mercenary.
  • Deadpool’s got a deep disdain of superheroes, and they recorded a voiceover where Wade says “’Even if you have cancer, just murdered a man in Mexico and you’re on the brink of death, if someone offers you the choice to become a superhero, the answer should be no…’”

Only Deadpool breaks the fourth wall, and they were aware of how close they came when Wade is railing against the Green Lantern costume. Speaking of which, Deadpool does go on a “whole anti-Green Lantern run”, but Miller’s not sure if it will make the final cut. “You can’t only play to the comic fans. He’s spouting weird shit all the time, and if you don’t pick up on every joke, that’s fine. But you can’t leave everybody behind all the time. Any joke that an audience needs to look up on the internet after the movie is not something I’m in favour of. But that scene’s one for the DVD extras, for sure,” says Miller.

  • The reason Deadpool is sitting on the bridge is he’s waiting for Ajax (Ed Skrein), who he believes can fix his face. The only problem is that there’s a convoy coming, and Deadpool only has 12 bullets to take down a bunch of bad guys.
  • There’s a five-year gap in the film, and during those five years is when Wade accepts that he can’t be fixed and decides to become the best hitman ever.
  • Miller offered the role of Colossus to Daniel Cudmore, who played the role in the X-Men movies, but Cudmore politely declined since the character would be entirely CG.

If Deadpool 2 ever happens, Miller believes they’ll have to make Cable the villain of else “we’ll be run out of town on a rail.” Cable also seems like a smart introduction since Cable can get Fox to X-Force, and further build the studio’s roster of superhero properties.

  • There are a few jokes in the Comic-Con trailer that didn’t make the red-band trailer, specifically, there were appearances by Stan Lee and by the character’s co-creator Rob Liefeld.

Deadpool opens February 12, 2016.

Here’s the official synopsis:

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, DEADPOOL tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
