While we brought you a teaser trailer for the racial satire Dear White People a month or so ago, the new official trailer for the film is now available.  To be quite honest, I prefer this new cut to the previous one since it gives a much better sense of the comedy’s tone.  There’s plenty of social commentary to be found and it appears as if no topic is out of bounds, be it weaves, interracial dating, or the definition of racism itself.  I fully expect lots of nervous laughter in theaters later this fall.

Written and directed by Justin SimienDear White People stars Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Kyle Gallner, Malcolm Barrett, Brittany Curran, Marque Richardson, and Dennis Haysbert, and opens in theaters October 17th.  Hit the jump to watch the new trailer.

Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama.   Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college in a sharp and funny feature film debut that earned him a spot on Variety’s annual “10 Directors to Watch.”  When Dear White Peoplescreened at MOMA’s prestigious New Directors/New Films, the New York Times’ A.O. Scott wrote, “Seeming to draw equal measures of inspiration from Whit Stillman and Spike Lee, but with his own tart, elegant sensibility very much in control, Mr. Simien evokes familiar campus stereotypes only to smash them and rearrange the pieces.”

The unexpected election of activist Samantha White (Tessa Thompson) as head of a traditionally black residence hall sets up a college campus culture war that challenges conventional notions of what it means to be black. While Sam leverages her notoriety as host of the provocative and polarizing radio show “Dear White People” to try to prevent the college from diversifying Armstrong Parker House, outgoing head-of-house Troy Fairbanks (Brandon P. Bell), son of the university’s dean (Dennis Haysbert), defies his father’s lofty expectations by applying to join the staff of Pastiche, the college’s influential humor magazine. Lionel Higgins (Tyler James Williams), an Afro-sporting sci-fi geek, is recruited by the otherwise all-white student newspaper to go undercover and write about black culture—a subject he knows little about—while the aggressively assimilated Coco Conners (Teyonah Parris) tries to use the controversy on campus to carve out a career in reality TV.

But no one at Winchester University is prepared for Pastiche’s outrageous, ill-conceived annual Halloween party, with its “unleash your inner Negro” theme throwing oil on an already smoldering fire of resentment and misunderstanding. When the party descends into riotous mayhem, everyone must choose a side.

Dear White People is written, directed and produced by Justin Simien. The film stars Tyler James Williams (“Everybody Hates Chris,” Peeples), Tessa Thompson (For Colored Girls, “Veronica Mars”), Kyle Gallner (A Nightmare on Elm Street, CBGB), Teyonah Parris (“Mad Men,” They Came Together), Brandon P. Bell (“Hollywood Heights”), Malcolm Barrett (The Hurt Locker), Brittany Curran (“Chicago Fire”), Marque Richardson (“The Newsroom”) and Dennis Haysbert (“24,” Far From Heaven).

Just imagine a movie titled “Dear Black People” There’d be riots

    • Falco

Not if it’s as intelligently crafted as “Dear White People”. Then the only riots would be the ones of laughter in the theaters. And apparently this movie is so clever that they acknowledged your hypothetical cynicism before you even thought of it.

Sure sure. Remember that movie ‘White Chicks’ its funny bcus 2 black dudes pretended to be white, and its funny N sH***.

Now if we flipped it and made one called Black Chicks..holy sh***!

      • Strong Enough

its holy shit now. Go ahead and riot in the streets for this movie. no one is stopping you

Blackface existed in America well before the people who made “White Chicks” were ever born. There’s no need for a “retaliatory” movie such as “Black Chicks” because the former was a response to the racist American history that is still embraced by some people to this day.

No one can blame you for not knowing about the history of blackface, but now you have no excuse.

There is allowed to be a movie called Dear White People because white people have sucked for hundreds of years. I think we can take some ribbing.

People are very racist in that video’s comment section. It’s.. shocking.

    • Neo Racer

Ah yes the Liberals have got the race card covered. Dare to have a different opinion and your in instant Racist!!!

      • Polarboy

If you say something intended as racism you are racist, simple as.

      • Diaz

I agree with your statement… Liberal America does not. Intention is everything. Context! But nowadays that doesn’t matter. Here’s how others would craft your sentence; “If you say something I take as racism, you are racist. Simple as.” Isn’t that just sad? Alright! Back to light hearted movie talk and not politically charged rants!

      • Polarboy

Well you don’t know what my context for racism is, to be clear I find people who harp on about liberal America every time someone dares mention racism to be of dubious character.

      • Response.

The words “liberal”, “Democrat”, “conservative”, and “Republican” have no place in the vocabulary of an intelligently articulated individual. That person is aware of the loaded connotation of those words and knows that using them is enough to negate their argument in the eyes of the receiver.

It’s YouTube… You could start a race war on a My Little Pony video’s comment section.

  • Real Talk

Sticking it to honky tonk whitey cracker f-cks. Seeing dumb ass reverse racism claiming loser honkies get pissy about the latent guilt they feel for being privileged is f-cking boner inducing. “But, derp, white people have hard times too, derp, derr DERRRP!”

    • Really?

What an incredibly hateful and stupid comment.

Then you completely missed the point of it.

    Cool! Another white guilt movie!

    • SorryNotSorry

      Are you gonna be OK?

  • http://www.beyondhollywood.com/ Dedpool

Okay, yeah I’m watching this. And I’m black! With a mixed race daughter! And I don’t discriminate.

  • Diaz

It looks interesting. I’m interested to see just how preachy the film gets and whether or not it addresses the idea of white guilt. It kinda seems to in the trailer. That said, political views aside, lets all take this for what it is. Just a dumb comedy.

  • Grendal Sven

Watching this trailer makes me want to dust off my Blazing Saddles VHS and pop it in the machine.

Your buddy’s sister is a child abusing crack whore with a limp and yellow teeth.

  • Myrtle’s Abusive husband

That’s because your buddy’s sister spends her afternoons at the local elementary school tossing preteen boys’ salads for $15 a pop behind the bleachers during recess. Don’t know why you haven’t figured it out yet. It’s pretty obvious when you think about it.
