Peter Berg's true-life account of the tragic 2010 BP oil spill, Deepwater Horizon, has gained two new cast members - action legend Kurt Russell, who recently appeared in the box-office mega hit Furious 7, and Teen Wolf and The Maze Runner star Dylan O'Brien. Summit Pictures' “big, dramatic blockbuster” is named after the doomed oil rig that exploded in the Gulf of Mexico, killing eleven people stationed on the rig, injuring 17 more, and sending more than 160 million gallons of oil gushing into the Gulf. The film also stars Mark Wahlberg and Jane the Virgin breakout Gina Rodriguez.

Berg has described his approach to the subject as a story about the "real heroes" aboard the rig who tried to prevent the catastrophe, including the eleven crew members killed in the explosion. Per Deadline, O’Brien will play Caleb Holloway, Deepwater Horizon's youngest crew member, who survived the disaster, but is devastated by the loss of his crew. Variety reports that Kurt Russell is in talks for an unknown role in the project.

Berg took the helm of Deepwater Horizon back in January when J.C. Chandor fell off the project to do “creative differences”. While Chandor intended the film as a meditative poem on the relationship between human beings and oil, Berg's recent comments on the film indicate that his approach, in the vein of his last film Lone Survivor, is a much more straightforward survival tale aimed at honoring the human story of the heroes who lost their lives. Deepwater Horizon is currently in pre-production in Louisiana and is set for a September 30, 2016 release date.
