‘Deepwater Horizon’ Trailer: Mark Wahlberg Leads Oil Rig Disaster Drama
Summit Entertainment has released the first trailer for Lone Survivor director Peter Berg’s true-story action drama Deepwater Horizon. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and recounts the heroism of the brave men and women who saved numerous lives during the 2010 BP oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico, which was the world’s largest man-made disaster in history. This is an incredibly effective teaser trailer that is positively gripping, as Wahlberg’s daughter explains how oil rigs work while ominous scenes from the Deepwater Horizon foreshadow the impending disaster. There’s a bit of a Perfect Storm vibe here, but Berg also appears to be delving deep into thriller territory, which is promising.
While I’ll admit I was bummed to see director J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year) exit the project, Berg have proven to be a solid filmmaker, and I’m curious to see if his version of the film will get into any of the real-world consequences of the disaster or if it will keep the focus on the humans aboard the oil rig. Either way, this is certainly one to watch for later this year.
