Director Derek Cianfrance is adding yet another project to his to-do list. The Blue Valentine filmmaker made waves earlier this year with his stellar drama The Place Beyond the Pines, and now he says he’s going to direct a film about a clown called A Cotton Candy Autopsy. Speaking with Jeff Goldsmith on his podcast, Cianfrance said that he will be writing Autopsy with his Pines co-writer Darius Marder, and added, “I don’t know how to describe it, except that it’ll be a crazy movie.” He also revealed that Pines standout Ben Mendelsohn will have a role. Hit the jump for more on Cianfrance’s upcoming schedule and news of one project that won’t be moving forward.
Cianfrance has built himself a fairly busy slate as of late. Producer David Heyman recently told Steve that the filmmaker is currently penning the script for the DreamWorks adaptation The Light Between Oceans, which he will direct, and he just signed on to write and direct the ESPN film Those Guys Have All the Fun. It sounds like it’s early days on Cotton Candy Autopsy and the film doesn’t appear to have a studio behind it just yet, so there’s no telling when or if it will see the light of day. The Light Between Oceans appears to be the furthest along of all of Cianfrance’s upcoming projects, so that could serve as his Pines follow-up. At this point, though, I’ll be first in line for whatever Cianfrance cooks up.
One project that Cianfrance won’t be doing is his long-gestating bodybuilding HBO series Muscle, which he told Goldsmith (via The Film Stage) has been dropped by the cable network. No reason is given, but HBO is a busy place as well so maybe Cianfrance’s take on the material didn’t gel with what they had in mind.
