Reese Witherspoon, Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Corey Stoll, Kuoth Wiel, Sarah Paker, Writer Margaret Nagle, and Producers Talk THE GOOD LIE

the-good-lie-slice

The Good Lie is an inspiring film about love, survival and triumph over adversity and a powerful reminder of what’s really important in life.  Philippe Falardeau directs the moving story of “The Lost Boys” who were uprooted by the brutal Sudanese Civil War that lasted from 1983 to 2005.  Young orphans of war, both boys and girls, trekked thousands of miles on foot through hostile, treacherous terrain to escape the violence and find safety.  Fifteen years later, a humanitarian effort would bring 3600 of them from Kenya’s Kakuma refugee camp to America.  The entertaining drama stars Reese Witherspoon, Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany, Emmanuel Jal, Corey Stoll, Kuoth Wiel, and Sarah Baker.

At a recent press conference in Nashville, Witherspoon, Oceng, Duany, Wiel, Stoll, Baker, screenwriter Margaret Nagle, producers Molly Smith, Thad Luckinbill and Trent Luckinbill, and UNICEF’s Kent Page talked about the importance of telling the story with integrity, Nagle’s exhaustive research, the lengthy development process, the struggle for financing, finding the right cast for the film’s central roles, how the part of Carrie was written with Witherspoon in mind, why they chose not to play up the white girl coming to the rescue angle, how the African actors found making the film a difficult but rewarding experience, and their hope that it will raise awareness and create change.  The film opens limited October 3rd and goes wide October 24th.  Check out the interview after the jump:

Annabelle Wallis & Ward Horton Talk ANNABELLE and How ROSEMARY’S BABY Influenced Their Performances

by     Posted 9 hours ago

 Annabelle-Wallis-Ward-Horton-Annabelle-interview

Yes – Annabelle for all intents and purposes is a spinoff of last year’s surprise success The Conjuring, taking that film’s stand-out side character (the eponymous creepy doll) and placing an entire film around it/her; but what the marketing and previews have failed to fully reveal – is that Annabelle, at heart, is much less a cash-grab Conjuring offshoot but more so an extended homage to early era Polanski, in particular Rosemary’s Baby & Repulsion.  Annabelle Wallis and Ward Horton star as Mia & John, a couple coping through the repercussions of a vicious attack. The newfound family (she having just given birth to a daughter) move into an apartment complex wherein in her husband’s absence (he’s much too busy with his burgeoning medical career), she begins to experience violent supernatural forces all seemingly stemming from that good-for-nothing doll.  You don’t even have to look at the character names to see that Wallis and Horton are doing their damnedest to channel Mia Farrow and John Cassavetes.

In the following interview with Wallis and Horton, the two discuss playing and subverting the Farrow/Cassavete’s archetypes, establishing a familial bond and revisiting the classic Polanski films.  For the full interview hit the jump.

richard-linklater-thats what im talking about

Boyhood is surprisingly close to reaching $40 million worldwide to go along with the waves of acclaim for director Richard Linklater.  We recently learned that Linklater plans to capitalize on this buzz to pursue That’s What I’m Talking About, a spiritual sequel to Dazed and Confused that Linklater has wanted to make for years.  Now he’ll get the chance: Deadline reports Annapurna Pictures has signed on to finance That’s What I’m Talking About.  Paramount will release the movie in North America.  Annapurna International will sell the foreign rights.

Blake Jenner stars as a college freshman and pitcher for the school baseball team, set in 1980 during his first weekend at college partying with his teammates.  Wyatt Russell, Ryan Guzman, Zoey Deutch, Will Brittain, and Glen Powell co-star.  Linklater, Sean Daniel, Sandra Adair, John Sloss, Ginger Sledge, and the ineffable Megan Ellison will produce.

Warner Bros. has released a batch of eight The Judge clips from director David Dobkin’s (Wedding Crashers) upcoming drama.  Robert Downey Jr. plays an attorney who returns home for his mother’s funeral only to learn that his estranged father (Robert Duvall), a judge who suffers from Alzheimer’s, has been accused of murder.  The film marks a major departure for Dobkin, who has previously helmed comedies like Fred Claus and The Change-Up, and it’s also a big debut of sorts for Downey Jr.—The Judge is the first film released under his production banner Team Downey, which he runs with his wife and producing partner Susan Downey.  These clips offer a good snapshot of the film’s tone, which is certainly dramatic but also tinged with Downey’s signature quick-witted sense of humor.

SCORPION Recap: “Single Point of Failure”

Last week’s premiere of CBS’s action-drama Scorpion was so fast-paced that it didn’t have time to breathe, thus depriving its supposedly advanced collective brain of oxygen.  Thankfully, the follow-up episode calmed down on the l33t speak and took a bit more time between action beats and epiphanies.  The result: a much more enjoyable hour of television that is moved closer to earning its self-described level of intelligence.  The wisest movie Scorpion makes in its second showing is backing off on the braininess a little bit, and allowing each of the characters to show a little heart.  Hit the jump for our Scorpion recap.

GOTHAM Recap: “Selina Kyle”

gotham-recap

In the Gotham series premiere, viewers were introduced to a world without Batman that nonetheless featured many of the other heroes and villains from the storied franchise.  While the characters seem comfortable in their small-screen iterations, some of the actors are still working out the kinks.  It’s early yet, but the frontrunner for “Best Scenery Chewer” so far is Jada Pinkett Smith in her turn as ambitious gangster Fish Mooney.  Detective James Gordon is obviously the show’s lead and the city’s lone straight arrow, but Ben McKenzie hasn’t yet figured out the balance of noble hero and noir tough guy; instead he winds up just scowling a lot.  In between, however, we have quite a bit of potential, specifically in the performances of youngsters David Mazouz and Camren Bicondova, and relative newcomer Robin Lord Taylor.  Thankfully the show’s second episode gives each of them a share of the spotlight.  Hit the jump for tonight’s Gotham recap.

New GOTHAM Trailer Reveals Victor Zsasz, Arkham City, Sal Maroni and More

gotham-villains-slice

A few minutes ago, I had no clue who Victor Zsasz was, but thanks to this new Gotham trailer, now I do and I want to know more about him.  Admittedly, I missed out on the first episode of the new Fox drama, but Dave dubbed the premiere a solid start and it also scored a 3.2 rating with adults 18-49 and a strong boost from the DVR viewership, too.  Soon enough, we’ll find out if those numbers are the result of the initial hype or if Gotham’s got the legs to contend with some of the other successful superhero TV shows out there.

While we wait for the next ratings report to come in, why not check out what’s to come during the show’s first season?  Again, I’ve got some catching up to do, so all of the material in this season preview is a draw, but Anthony Carrigan’s Victor Zsasz is as unnervingly alluring as they come.  Hit the jump to catch him in action for yourself.  Gotham airs Monday nights on Fox at 8/7c.

INHERENT VICE Trailer: Joaquin Phoenix Leads Paul Thomas Anderson’s Psychedelic Detective Romp

by     Posted 13 hours ago

inherent-vice-trailer

Warner Bros. has released the highly anticipated first Inherent Vice trailer for filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson’s adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel, and it is glorious.  The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as private detective Larry “Doc Sportello” who is enlisted to help a former lover thwart a potential kidnapping involving her current billionaire boyfriend.  While PTA has trended a bit darker with his past few films, Inherent Vice looks to be a delightfully goofy romp that’s closer in tone to Boogie Nights than There Will Be Blood.  I found myself laughing multiple times during this trailer, and Joaquin Phoenix looks to be absolutely perfect casting as the pothead protagonist.  Moreover, the supporting cast appears to be phenomenal as well, with Josh Brolin getting a particularly hilarious standout moment here.  Anderson cuts his own trailers so this is likely a very accurate snapshot of the film’s vibe as a whole, and all I can say is it’s made the wait for the film’s release feel so, so, so much farther away.

Hit the jump to watch the Inherent Vice trailer.  The film also stars Owen Wilson, Katherine Waterston, Reese Witherspoon, Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Jena Malone, and Joanna NewsomInherent Vice opens in limited release on December 12th.

Tommy Wirkola Not Returning to Direct HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS 2

by     Posted 13 hours ago

hansel-and-gretel-2-tommy-wirkola

Even though he has completed the script to the film, Tommy Wirkola (who also helmed the Dead Snow films) has said that he’s decided against returning to direct Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2.  I’m not sure if this really qualifies as a blow against the film since Wirkola is still attached to produce the thing and oversee his script, and if Paramount is able to find some young hotshot director to make this their playground then it could actually be a cool scenario.

I identify with Wirkola’s reasoning here, as it seems he doesn’t want to be caught in an endless cycle of making sequels to his own films.  The biggest hurdle facing the project remains the potential unavailability of star Jeremy Renner.  Hit the jump for more on Tommy Wirkola not returning to direct Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters 2.

David Fincher Will Direct Every Episode of UTOPIA’s First Season on HBO

david-fincher-utopia-hbo

With a new David Fincher film set for release this Friday (the highly anticipated Gone Girl, obviously), talk has turned to what the filmmaker will do next.  There was a significant wait between The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and Gone Girl, as Fincher was developing his 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea remake at Disney for some time before the project floundered.  More recently, Fincher flirted with possibly reteaming with Aaron Sorkin on Sony’s Steve Jobs biopic, but he walked when Sony was unwilling to give him the kind of creative control he was insisting upon (no doubt still sour from the contentious Dragon Tattoo production).  He also even took a meeting on Star Wars, but turned it down.

Fincher recently said that he will be focusing on his HBO series Utopia for all of 2015, and now we know why: the filmmaker has revealed that he intends to direct every episode of the show’s first season.  More after the jump.

It’s been four years since we got a Saw release for Halloween, but this year, the franchise is out to make a quick buck off its seven-film run.  In honor of the franchise’s 10th anniversary, the very first Saw film will hit the big screen again for one week beginning October 31st.

Leading up to the start of the film’s one-week run, we’ll get five brand new posters all of which will feature Amanda Young’s (Shawnee Smith) reverse bear trap.  In fact, the first one already hit the web and it’s a stunning rendering of one of Jigsaw’s most iconic traps.  Hit the jump to check that out and to watch the Saw re-release trailer as well.

Chris Pratt Proves Marvel Can’t Fail in SNL Parody Video

by     Posted 15 hours ago

There was a lot of talk about how big of a risk Guardians of the Galaxy was for Marvel Studios, and on some level it was.  But after the film’s massive box office success (it’s currently the highest grossing film of the year stateside), it became clear that the Marvel brand has now somewhat overshadowed the studio’s actual content—audiences trust that a Marvel movie will be fun, humorous, and entertaining, and so there’s a certain amount of built-in audience Marvel can expect for the properties that the studio chooses to develop.  When Chris Pratt hosted Saturday Night Live this weekend, the variety series opted to poke some fun at this notion by putting together a trailer for some of Marvel’s other upcoming projects.  Personally, I would buy a ticket for Pam 2: The Winter Pam in a heartbeat.

MAGIC MIKE XXL Adds Elizabeth Banks, Donald Glover, Amber Heard, and More to Cast; Gets a Synopsis

I’m getting excited for Magic Mike XXL (despite the fact that Matthew McConaughey won’t be returning).  And I’m excited even though original director Steven Soderbergh (who was able to guide his first film from a $7 million budget to a $167 million worldwide gross), won’t be back either (actually he will, since he’s shooting it under his alias Peter Andrews, which effectively provides new director Gregory Jacobs with the best sounding board ever).  This movie will still, in all likelihood, rule. Channing Tatum is of course back and now he’s got company.

Elizabeth Banks and Donald Glover have joined the film along with Amber Heard, Andie MacDowell and Jada Pinkett-Smith.  And it has a synopsis now too!  Hit the jump to learn the (bodacious) plot basics for Magic Mike XXL.

New X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Viral Video Teases Quicksilver’s Parentage

The viral marketing for the DVD and Blu-ray release of X-Men: Days of Future Past continues today with another social media post from “Peter Maximoff” aka Quicksilver.  The character as played by Evan Peters was an undeniable highlight of the X-Men sequel earlier this year, and 20th Century Fox is capitalizing on his popularity with a series of viral videos that tease the home video release of Days of Future Past.  While I’m certainly looking forward to seeing the film again and thumbing through the extras, Fox has already announced that an extended cut of the movie will hit home video next summer.  The question then becomes, to double dip or not to double dip?
