Universal Pictures has released the first Despicable Me 3 trailer. In the sequel, Steve Carell will not only be reprising his role as Gru, but also Gru’s long-lost twin brother Dru, “who is exactly like Gru except with hair, and also different in every way.” This time around, Gru will be facing off against Balthazar Bratt (Trey Parker), a former child star “driven to supervillainy as a result of the abrupt cancelation of his TV series when he hit puberty.”

But here’s the thing about the Despicable Me movies: the plot does not matter. I saw Despicable Me 2, and could not tell you what happened in that film, nor would a plot synopsis illuminate anything. All that matters is that it had the adorable minions running around being adorable. That’s pretty much the entire plot of Minions, and while I’m sure Gru will get into some shenanigans for Despicable Me 3, the previous film showed that the studio considers him secondary to his money-making minions.

“How much money?” you ask. The first two Despicable Me movies and Minions have combined to gross over $2.5 billion worldwide. I can only imagine the amount of minion merchandise they’ve pushed is exponentially more. So I think it’s safe to assume that Despicable Me 3 will probably be a hit.

Check out the trailer below. Despicable Me 3 opens June 30, 2017.
