The serial-killer drama Dexter is one of Showtime’s biggest earners of both ratings and critics’ praise. As one of the show’s many devoted fans, and given the totally game-changing finale of Season 4, I’m counting the days until it returns. And for all you other Dexter junkies out there currently bottoming out in the midst of the long slog toward September, we’ve got the fix. EW’s The Ausiello Files blog has an interview with Dexter executive producer Sara Colleton in which she drops a few interesting details on what we can expect to see in Season 5. If you don’t like spoilers, you’re going to want to steer clear. Otherwise, hit the jump for a taste of what’s in store for your favorite sardonic sociopath and his Dark Passenger.

Season 5 will pick up right where season 4 left off.

“We have spent the last month sitting around, talking and really debating how best to deal with the aftermath of [Rita's death]. We uniformly decided that we don’t want to jump ahead. We need to see Dexter go through the process that we’d all have to go through if such a horrible thing had happened to us. We need to see him doing everything from the big emotional things like grieving the loss, to the mundane things like arranging a funeral, getting the kids dressed, and all the other things that are usually done for men because their wives or mothers do them. They have no idea how to handle all of these things. As we saw, Rita was really the caretaker of their baby. It would be cheating the audience of their catharsis to not see Dexter go through that mourning period and see how it affects him or to not see him dealing with the blowback of what he essentially caused. So we will not jump to Harrison as a 5 year old yet.”

Season 5 may not feature a Trinity-esque villain.

“John Lithgow is a tough act to follow. If there was ever a year that we could take a step back from the Big Bad formula and go deeper into Dexter and his psychology, this would be that year. That said, Dexter has a dark passenger that won’t go away no matter how much he yearns to be normal. That rears up and needs to be dealt with. He may even dive deeper after this traumatic loss of Rita. We are working on a way that feels original and fresh and unique to what he has just gone through. It cannot be the way it has been before. In [Season 1], he was terrified of any kind of intimacy because intimacy equaled being discovered. Then he slowly realized he had a need to be known and he set up a family and tried the best he could to balance it all. And now, he sees what being known brings him and he had it ripped out from underneath him suddenly and that will have some affect on him.”

Dexter will remain single… for now.

“Anything is possible, but I don’t think Dexter will be in the mood for dating or love anytime soon. That’s not even on our radar right now. He very much loved Rita and they were in a good place right before she was killed so that wound will take quite some time to heal.”

Colleton also reiterates that star Michael C. Hall is in full remission and back in good overall health after his recent bout with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, which he was battling while filming last season. Congratulations to him on that.

As for the show, seeing exactly how Dexter picks up the pieces in the aftermath of finding his wife floating in a tub of her own blood is what has me most intrigued about next season, and I’m glad we’ll enter into the experience from the beginning. I’m also happy they’re probably going to be moving away from the “Big Bad”; I’m getting a bit tired of the whole Dexter vs. the big boss serial killer formula. Anyone care to venture a few guesses on what else we’ll see next season? How will Dexter balance the responsibilities of single fatherhood with his need to chop people up into itty bitty pieces? Will investigating Rita’s murder put Deb on the path to discovering her brother’s dark hobby?

  1. I guess they don't want to say whether or not Dexter will be a suspect in his wifes murder. They completely set it up at the end of last season 1. Rita was caught cheating on Dexter by Masuka 2.Dexter was seen talking to “Trinity” by Batista IN the police station and 3. Rita was killed “Trinity” style. I am almost positive that Dexter will be under the microscope if not under suspicion for the death of Rita.

  2. I totally agree Bogie. I think Season 4 saw several characters begin to 'red flag' Dexter's unaccountable behavior. His sister's reaction when Dexter was found already inside Trinity's house during the raid was pretty telling. And then there's the whole issue of Trinity's entire family knowing Dexter for months under another name. You have to assume that the murder of the wife of a cop would draw intense Miami TV coverage. How the writers could keep Trinity's family from learning Dexter's identity is beyond me. Should be an intense season 5.

  3. In the last couple of Dexter books, Deb has known abouts Dexter's Dark Passenger, but ignores it until she needs help solving a case, so I can't wait until/if the writers explore that. I think Trinity's family knowing about Dexter will just be ignored (Plot Hole).

  4. i quite like the bad guy formula because dexter always come up with new exiting ways to outsmart his victims, but with his chase against a serial killer like him he has to sometimes wing it, because the victim is trying to outsmart him back.

  5. I am definitely very excited about this season. I think season 5 will be very different from all the previous seasons. I loved this show and was kind of sad to see Rita leave the show.

Anyways, I hope for the best.

Also check out this site, I got several of my video games for free. Just complete surveys and play games.

  6. Well was truely holding on to my hopes that Dexter would wake up to find it was only a dream and poor Rita was not dead. I mean there are many plot holes in how she died and if Trinity even was the one to kill her. For example…
The message she left on Dexters phone said she was looking at the moon…You think she waited at the house until it was dark outside to see the moon???? No….
AND Trinity didnt know where Dexter lived! As proven when he was looking for him. The house wasnt even under Dexters name it was under Pauls.
All Trinity wanted was to get out of town I dont think he wanted to risk going to kill Rita. That would be stupid of him…
There just wasnt enough time for him to have done it.

BUT After reading this though, it looks like Im wrong and a dream is not the case. :(

That being said it sure is going to be interesting where the show goes from here. Dexter will most likely be looked at as a suspect. The husband always is the first one to be looked at. Should be awesome. Poor little Astor and Cody. Harrison to but I think it will effect the older two more. That is if this doesnt cause Harrison to be a sociopath. Cant wait for season 5!!!!

  7. Can't wait to see how Dexter worms his way out of this one, and i hope to see more hand-to-hand fighting in season 5 so Dexter can show of his ninja skills :)

  8. i think the jig is up for dexter. the police are going to want to know where he was when rita was murdered and we all know he was killing trinity so he will not have an alibi. They will start to question dexter especially quinn because he was already suspicous of dexter. deb will defend her brother to the bitter end but i think that this is the season that dexter gets caught. he will not be able to handle a full time job, kids, and a dark passanger. I think this is it for dexter!

  9. She didn't say she was looking at the moon, she just said it was going to be a beautiful moon tonight even though she knew it wasn't his thing.

Paul didn't own that house, he owned the house Rita lived in when she met Dexter. After they got married they bought a new house, remember miguels wife the realestate lady, and the fact Dexter kept his apartment after they moved into their new house, as well as the new neighbor Elliot when before it was the lady with the yappy dog that *ehem got relocated lol.

Trinity definately had time as Dexter was at his house with Arthurs family and the whole raid thing. He could have gotten Dexters address from Debs place.

  10. Seriously doubt it will end with everyone knowing who Dexter really is.. ever..

I think Dexter will manipulate the crime scene somehow as to not implicate himself.

There is definately some “clean up” to do from Trinity, like the above comment of people seeing Dexter talking to the Trinity killer in the police station. Dexter being in the garage of Arthurs house when the cops showed up. The money Dex took from Arthur that he said he would make sure the family saw. The fact the whole family knows him as Kyle Butler.

My favorite part of this season had to be the times you saw the anger come out in Dex. When he drug Arthur into the kitchen and pulls the knife, that was great. When he headbutts Quinn. Not near as good as when he headbutted Dokes and called him his b*tch haha but good. I've thoroughly enjoyed every season of Dexter and really hope there are many more to come. The characters have been built well and we love them all. Batista marrying LeGuardo…. ugh… didn't think that was a good development but hey, She's always mixed up with someone and he's always chasin it, at least she's not hittin on Dexter anymore lol.

    Love Dexter, bring it on!

  11. How sad …..Rita. She was so perfectly opposite Dexter. Her character had developed into an exceptional softness for his `dark passenger`.
That said the show never fails to thrill, each series having its own story. We have empathy with the victims and often wish there was a real live Dexter with his ingenius power of finding the real truth in other situations .
I cannot wait for the next 20 series!!!! Long live Dexter Morgan.

  12. Oh, i think Rita's death is so tragic! i'm waiting for the next serie but i don't think it will be the same anymore…. i mean, Dexter and Rita were the perfect couple….

  13. Bogie – if you watch that episode closely, Batista didn't notice Dexter talking to Trinity. I thought the same thing until I watched it again

  14. Loosing Rita is too big loss for the show. So writers please.. let it be just a bad dream :)
Dexter is the best series I ever watched.. perfect theme, characters, story, acting..
Just love his internal talks.. voice, way of talk… Michael is perfect…
And let me say.. we all have some dark passanger.. We all are Dexters :) )
Cant wait for the 5th and for many more.

  15. i am extremely happy to see rita go.she was such a nag.no wonder her ex did drugs :) i did cry when i seen the baby sitting there though.poor baby Dex.

  16. mabe we shall see rita again, right beside his father mentoring. would be nice to see her knowing who dex really is. im gonna bet that hes in the shit house, being investigated for murder. He is going to go numb, not want to fight and just give up, but then Rita pops in and brings him back to life, for the kids sake. then his sis figures out who he is and saves him, by framing someone else or creating an allaby for him, saying he was with her that night.. But quinn dosnt fall for it, he digs to find clues to put him away. Masuka tells him that he saw Rita cheated on dex. Quinn gets closer. Dex was talkin to trinity. quinn gets closer. Rita was killed like the other trinity victoms. Quinn keeps pushing at it and pissing dexter off. Dex is having a hard time keeping his darkness contained, he needs to kill, but cant because Quinn is on his ass every second of every day. Dex is also trying to put back the pieces of his family and Quinn is not making it easy for him. Dex finally looses it and plans to get rid of him, but Rita's there trying to convince him not to. Hes done fighting it anymore, hes convinced this is the only way for the family to begin repairing and for him to have his kill. As the moment comes, he doesnt do it. He reviels a new side of himself. he holds back the dark passanger. quinn ends up dead any way….just because…

  18. I find that the people getting Genuinely Angry about the murder of Rita to be a testament to the emotional power of the series. I was/am so heartbroken that she was killed, and now we get to experience any of the same emotions as Dexter might finally have, bringing us closer to him as a character.

Bravo to all involved in producing such an excellent show!

  19. Or they won't say anything, and just be happy that Dexter saved them from Trinity. How is that a plot hole? It makes sense to me.

  20. The police didnt know who trinity really was so it wouldnt matter that he was talking to Dexter in the police station.

  21. I'm also glad Rita is dead and I really hope it wasn't a dream
She's annoying, calls at the worst possible times, AND she has THE MOST annoying voice EVER!
I'm excited for Season 5 and hope way down the road Dexter finds a new girl who gives him the space he needs and lets him keep his damn appartment.
    just saying.

  22. Dude one dexter waited for his wife and kid to leave in the cab b4 goin after trinity so where how the hell did that happen and thanx for ruining one of the best shows ever. Rita dieing was way to over kill. i didnt think i was watchin the sci fi channel. WAY TO MANY HOLY FUCK GOD coincedences. and yeah Dexter for being a genius is the biggest dumbass ever in season 4 yeah lets have trinitys hammer get close see what he does to his family, show him ur dark side and yeah lets keep playing with this fuck while he has a new family and the hammer in trinitys murder and theres absolutly no reason not to give him to the cops give him to deb then the fbi wouldnt steal her shit. and yeah harry warned him but didnt say once hey give him to the police u have many other fucks who belong on ur table u screwed up on this one. Dexter turned from a weird genius u were impressed by who never screws up to just a big ole fuckin dumbass. way to go writers killin rita was about the 6th inch of way to much fuckin icing on my cake. showtime better hope californication, weeds, and tudors makes up for dex in 2010-11 killing rita after all that BS you were allready tryin to throw down my neck. i mean christine was a push Rita pure fuckin retarded. this aint days of our lives you only have 12 eposodes a year. step it up

    • If you would have paid attention, you would have noticed that Rita left a voicemail saying she forgot her passport and had to come back home to get it. When she returned home, that was Trinity’s chance to murder Rita. And as for the rest of your incoherent response to the season, I’m not even going to give you the honor of a dignified response, because I’d rather not waste my time getting some smart ass retort from someone who can’t even spell correctly. :)

  23. THIS SHOW SUCKS they change their characters personalties just for a season whenever its more conveneint to the writers

  24. The Police did find out that Auther was Trinity in the end. Know doubt when Angel see's a picture of the real Trinity, he is going to remember that guy talking to Dexter.

  25. I love the Dexter series , it got me though deployment. If we had time we would talk about the different thinks that would happen on the series. I can’t wait to see what happens in the new series.Dexter is the master of coming up with ways of getting his self out of trouble, with the law and his friends. We look forward to see what will happen next.
