Showtime’s Dexter finally comes to an end this Sunday with the show’s long-overdue series finale, and to mark the event Showtime has a released a pretty great retrospective video that runs down the past eight seasons of serial killer goodness.  The show has been a bit of a slog over the last few years—season six was damn-near unwatchable—but this video is a nice reminder of just how good Dexter can be when it’s firing on all cylinders.  It’s also a swell showcase of the consistently great work that Michael C. Hall has done in the title role.

Hit the jump to take a stroll down memory lane.  The Dexter series finale airs on Showtime this coming Sunday, September 22nd at 9pm ET/PT.

I’m not impressed at all with this last season, or at least these past few episodes. Season 7 would’ve been a great place to end it (with maybe some changes to the last episode to accommodate obviously).
But hey, we’ve all got our opinions about seasons – call me nuts, but I didn’t mind season 6 and found season 5 much worse. What you said is true, and this video’s a great reminder of what made Dexter so awesome.

  • ervin

it should have ended at least two seasons ago

  • David

Sadly, this series should have ended with, SPOILER: Rita’s death. That would have been the best possible ending…his son born in blood the same way he was…EVERY other season since has been garbage.

” The show has been a bit of a slog over the last few years”
I can’t agree with this. This means it’s been bad for several years in a row and I don’t agree with that. Season 7 was quite good imo and I also enjoyed 5 as well. I agree 6 wasn’t so great and this season has been a little meh, but I can’t agree with the idea it’s been all bad for years now.

    • Nick

It has been lousy from the start of season 5- now.. And let’s not forget season two was pretty iffy

      • HeSaidSheSaidReviewSite

Don’t agree with that at all. Season 2 is fantastic, as was season 7. 5 wasn’t bad either. Now 6 and 8 are a different story.

      • GrimReaper07

I’d say season 5 might have been the worst. If it hadn’t happened at all, nothing would be different. That season had zero repercussions. It felt like a story that’d be more at home as a lame tie-in novel.

This season of Dexter, as a series last, is just awful. I might be feeling extra sensitive as I watch this parallel to Breaking Bad which is phenomenal. Breaking Bad is how you finish a series, so exciting and tense. Dexter fully lacks the excitement and tension the story really deserves. There doesn’t seem to be any feeling of threat towards Dexter or hardly anyone else. The villain feels cheap and has no character. This season really needed to be more personal but there is too much focus outside of Dexter’s character. I care what happens to the characters in Breaking Bad but I don’t in Dexter anymore, unfortunately. A shame.

Yup nothing impactful happens in Dexter and its retarded how IF something in dexter happens and it makes you wonder…dexter in his mind will tell the viewer EXACTLY what is happening making because the viewer is a handicapped child. Imagine if Jesse Pinkman’s epiphany with brock and the resin happened in the same way it would in dexter. The Ghost of Gale would appear “Hey so it must have been Walt that got Huell to left the resin off you and then later poisoned Brock to make it look like it was Fring”….”yah bitch…YOU’RE RIGHT!”

      • Nick

Lol so true with the ghosts and inner monologues. I was willing to forgive certain stupidities of the show early on, but now I’m just excited it’ll be off the air. The Vogel character would be interested and cool IF and only IF she was alluded to in basically every season before. The fact that she just appeared and seems to be the main reason dexter is who he is, is just ridiculous. Oh and her son is a psycho killer, because they just grow on trees and everyone on Miami has a 1/3 change of having a psycho kid. And deb being in love with dexter is another stupid development that had no presence in prior seasons. Just one more reason for her to make her big ugly cock eyed faces. So the psycho count is, dexter. His brother. His girlfriend. His sorta step brother (vogels son). His ex best friend Miguel… It’s just stupid… Also season one he had no sexual attractions or interests that way. Season two he was all about it, when you want the viewer to believe the character has lived prior to episode one, and has a past, wean into major character developments.

      • Nick

Oh yeah and his trainee. Another one. These psychopathic killers seem to be everywhere these days lol

  • bombinUSA

this season has been just awful, no suspense, no payoff, no nothing. they introduced a brand new character and made her rather prominent so they could kill her off and make it seem like we would care. WE DON’T! They could have killed off any of the actual characters that we have followed since season one or heck they could have killed Quinn and created 40 times more emotion. Watching Dexter and then seeing Breaking Bad is hilarious, Dexter is not even in the same universe as Breaking Bad in terms of dramatic television. Dexter peaked with season 4 and trinity and has been down hill ever since (there was a slight improvement in season 7)…but otherwise there’s been little payoff to watch dexter other than Deb finding Dexter in the process of a kill at the end of season 6 and LaGuerta dying at the end of 7. But how many pointless episodes did we have to go through to get to those payoffs after season 4? like 50? BRUTAL. Bahh the only reason i continue to watch this trash is because i’ve been invested in the characters after the fantastic seasons 1,2 and 4.

  • Greyson

Somewhere, in a parallel universe, this was how Dexter aired:

    Season One
    Season Three
    Season Four
Season Five (only necessary because this is when Deb started shifting perspective)
    Season Seven
Season Two (replace crazy bitch with Hannah, Doakes with a new firey, ragey Miami Metro over the loss of Maria LaGuerta).

Oh, and turns out Matthews knew all along and was one of the reasons Dexter never got caught.

    • bombinUSA

yah exactly…the blowback of laguerta’s death is what should have caused Dexter to be caught/killed. Season 7 ended so well only to have this brutal season 8 completely throw it under the rug. Doakes as one of the true highlight of the show.

      • Greyson

I remember talking to my friends about how awesome/epic season 8 was going to be… because it was setting up for just this. The manhant of Miami Metro against Dexter. I was really excited to see how Deb was going to fall apart and add so much to Dexter already having his hands full. This season had so many great paths right in front of it… Just waiting to be taken. Rather than letting the narrative flow naturally, they just shoehorn new characters no one gives a shit about.

    • James

It would have been awesome if Matthews was the one who came up with the code and knew all about Dexter and protected him.

    • Nerdgasm

Mathews? Really? That would have been Horseshit.

      • Greyson

He was a great friend of Harry and he warned Dexter that Maria was on to him. If he didn’t, she could have caught him. And he’s always been a very “grey area” character. Please, tell me again how that isn’t logical?

I think season 6 should have been dexter, vogel, and his young trainee serial killer all working together. Dexter training him while not getting busted himself. Would have made some good suspense. And then Dexter lose both of them this season to a new serial killer, while also the police catching on to dexter. I thought the whole point of this series was that Dexter was hiding who he was to the world. The best ending would have been everyone finding out who he is. Especially the police department. Then he and Hanna could skip town or something else.

    • LEM

It makes no sense anymore because they’re trying to make us now believe he isn’t a psychotic sociopath in hiding who just happened to have his urges nurtured and focused on killing horrible people.

  • LEM

This show hit its high point at the end of season 2 and to go out on this disastrous season is a shame for what was once a great show and character.

    • derek

Ice cream truck killer was the high point for me.

      • LEM

You didn’t like Doakes finding out? they had the best on screen chemistry and the show lost so much when they killed him off.

      • derek

Doakes was fine. there was always some piece to a season that appealed to me. but as far as the direction of the series. they failed. John lithgows season was okay.

      • LEM

I actually thought Jimmy Smits was great too even though his ability to become a murderer so easily was crazy.

  • SV7

Dexter must be the most consistently frustrating tv series of recent years. It has a great but admittedly difficult premise, but script-wise it’s just so ordinary and lazy. It so often uses contrived and obvious set ups and then writes itself into corners that it can usually only get out of one way. It’s maddening and to see the writing praised by many is just mind boggling.

It has also totally lost what moral compass it had. Debra commits murder but hey it’s ok because she was “protecting” her brother? Murder in this situation was absolutely wrong and the show’s POV gives her a big pass for it. This is insane.

    • LEM

They haven’t been praised for the writing in quite awhile and in fact the fans all seem to agree that the show has gotten worse each year.

  • bombinUSA

season 3 was awful…season 2 was solid because of doakes…seasons 1 and 4 were the best. downhill since

    • LEM

I think after season 4 is when all the original writers and creators of the show left so it makes sense that it went into a tailspin but Showtime only saw the ratings go up so they didn’t care.

      • bombinUSA

really? the original writers left? i did not know that. it allll makes sense now. haha. just putrid how they destroyed the potential. for such a dark show with so many deaths to not make you care (not counting rita’s obviously), pretty pathetic.

  • SV7

Also… having Harry apparently committing suicide is pathetic. They have one episode left to set this right! I thought maybe Vogel would be revealed to be a psychopath and was responsible for Harry’s overdoes, making it look like a suicide. Maybe because they had different ideas about Dexter’s future. Surely this would have been a more satisfying explanation…?
