Exclusive: Screenwriter Diablo Cody Talks EVIL DEAD Remake; Calls it ‘Unbelievably Violent’

A few months ago we reported Fede Alvarez was going to write and direct an Evil Dead remake, with Diablo Cody doing some script revisions.  Now before you get up in arms that Evil Dead is being remade, it’s important to know that director Sam Raimi and original producing partners Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell are very much involved in the film.  Based on the original team’s inclusion, this is one of those projects I’m very curious about.

However, while we knew the remake was moving ahead as evidence by the premiere of the new logo at AFM and Lionsgate’s selling of international rights, no one was quite sure exactly how much work Cody had done on the script.  So when I spoke to her today for her great new movie Young Adult, she was more than willing to talk about her involvement on the film.  She said that she mostly handled dialogue and character, and addressed concerns people may have about her involvement by assuring me that she had no intention of infusing Evil Dead with “wacky dialogue and cute stuff” from Juno. In addition, she said the script is “unbelievably violent” and that the director’s draft was “really scary.”  Hit the jump for more.

Here’s the portion of the video interview on the Evil Dead remake.  Further down is the transcript.  Look for my full interview with Cody in early December.

diablo-cody-imageCollider: If I’m not mistaken, you did a draft or wrote the Evil Dead remake.

Diablo Cody: I did a draft. I did like a polish slash rewrite on the pre-existing, excellent script by Fede Alvarez.

Do you know if the draft that you submitted is the one they’re shooting with?

Cody: I’m not 100% sure. I guess it’s possible that that’s the one, but for all I know they could have commissioned another rewrite, you never know. Are they shooting right now?

No, but I think I’ve seen like a logo which means—

Cody: I think it’s going forward. I’m really excited to hear about it cause it was fun to work on.

When you worked on it, were you on it for a few weeks, was it a few months? And talk a little bit about working on it, cause this is a huge property for so many people.

evil-dead-movie-poster-01Cody: I know, honestly I was so excited to do it. I wouldn’t have even gotten involved if Sam [Raimi] and Bruce Campbell hadn’t been involved as well, they’re producing it, and so of course I was like “Alright I have to do this” because I’m such a fan of the original, and the whole original series in fact. But I was nervous to take the job because I thought “Ugh, I’m gonna get shit for this. People are not gonna like this, because all people know of me is like Juno and they think I’m gonna pollute Evil Dead with like wacky dialogue and cute stuff and folk music, and it’s like “No, look I understand what this is. I’m interested in storytelling here and making it scary and good and true to the original.” I feel like people will hopefully see Young Adult and go “Oh, okay that’s a horrifying movie maybe she could pull it off (laughs).”

Did you add or be a part of any gruesome R-rated death scene?

Cody: Because the director’s draft was really scary, I tried to stay away from some of the big horror set pieces. I didn’t wanna mess with his vision, because he’s the one who ultimately has to shoot it. That being said, there is a moment near the—I mean it’s unbelievably violent (laughs). Occasionally I threw in a wound here or there. I didn’t write anything extravagant.

So did you sort of do a pass on dialogue and character stuff?

Cody: Yes. And once again, I did not do like the standard dialogue people associate with me at all. I did very naturalistic dialogue that I felt would serve the story.

    Diablo Cody? WHY?

Some things just shouldn’t be remade.

  • Yes Man

    I will see this.

Damn it and stupid and grrrrrr. Whatever happened to Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell coming up with an Evil Dead 4? Audiences dont want a remake of a horror classic. The Thing…anyone? Friday the 13th? Nightmare on Elm Street? STUPID!!

    • andrew

What about The Fly? And don’t forget John Carpenters The Thing was a remake itself. I personally wouldn’t be so quick to dismiss these movies solely based on the fact that the original is “sacred ground” not worth retreading. Plus Raimi and Campbell have a hand in it, so maybe that counts for something right?

I am so fu%#ing sick of people using John Carpenter’s The Thing as a reference to remaking movies. His movie was completely different, and amazing. 99% of remakes today are complete crap, and almost everything out there is a remake. And they’re even going so far as remaking shit that is less than 10 years old and disguising it with the term “reboot.” The same goes for The Fly. Two great movies that weren’t done by hack directors have no place in this conversation… Idiot!

First mistake, an Evil Dead remake. Second mistake, Bruce Campbell not starring in it. Third mistake, a focus on being “unbelievably violent”, instead of a good storyline. This film is going to be garbage…possibly a direct to DVD release.

    • matt

your first mistake, bruce campell is far too old to be playing ash. he even said it himself. your second mistake, “a focus on being “unbelievably violent”, instead of a good storyline. This film is going to be garbage…possibly a direct to DVD release.” you never actually watched the original evil dead did you? i would suggest checking out the movies discussed on a website before attempting to put your two sense in…just sayin.

      • Dan

LOL.. well-played, Matt! The original Evil Dead was so NOT about story and characters. People need to read Bruce Campbell’s biography. They were told to, “keep the blood flowing” when they made ED, and that’s JUST what they did. Raimi, himself, even admits to working with an unfinished script. Now, all that aside, what makes The Evil Dead a great film is that, even without the character depth, they’re still very endearing and charming. Campbell’s “Ash” is the perfect bumbling-idiot-turned-superhero. I mean, ED was “campy” before Campy was campy. Na, mean? And lest we forget, Raimi was so far ahead of his time with his artisitic vision. One more point to Bruce not starring in it – He doesn’t WANT to star in it. He doesn’t even want another actor to assume the character of Ash because he doesn’t want fans tearing apart the poor actor’s performance. So, they’re going with a completely different group of characters, different names and everything. Although, rumor has it that Bruce may still make a cameo.

The Evil Dead series is and was the last of the great Drive-in cult classics! Not to be messed with and not to be “rebooted”! That being said an all new film with the same premise but a new set of characters could be somewhat cool if done CORRECTLY. The fact that Raimi and Campbell are both involved is encouraging. Hopefully optimistic! Oh… and by the way, on a different tangent is anybody interested in a final installment of the Jeepers Creepers series? I’d really love to see that.

I’m willing to give re-makes a chance. If they suck I wont pay to see them but if they are great then it’s all good.

  • TexasSinkholeFan229

Bad idea to remake ED. All CGI will look terrible, other problems notwithstanding. Jeepers Creepers 3 has been in the works for a long time now. Yes, hopefully it will see the light of day eventually.

dont see this as a remake, but a new version of the film. Raimi campbell and tappert are on the project so it will be good, so whats wrong ?

stop comparing with crappy cheesy movie like freddy , jason and halloween remake pls.

evil dead 2 was a remake (a new version of the 1st one) and was a good movie.

this movie will be awesome, cant wait.
