When I was growing up the only way a movie or television show got made into a toy was if it was called Star Wars. For some reason no one had put it together that people like to buy toys based on their favorite shows, or their favorite movie character. Maybe back then getting the license was difficult, or perhaps due to new avenues of distribution, like the internet, certain niche products can now reach a select niche audience that back in the 70’s and 80’s would have made it unprofitable to make. Either way it seems like nowadays your show really has to suck for it not to get a toy made. Almost every movie and television property now has a toy. And they don’t just have one - the studios now sell the licenses for their properties based on the size of the toy. So one company might own the license for a 12” version of a figure while another owns the 6” version. As a fan it can get very confusing trying to figure out who owns what.

But for what I am about to tell you, all of my problems with the toy/collectible industry just got put on hold. In what can only be described as an “it’s about time moment,” Diamond Select Toy and 20th Century FOX have joined forces to create and sell Office Space collectibles. While the terms of the agreement let them make a lot of different items, I would imagine toys are high on the list. I don’t know about any of you, but having a Bill Lumbergh figure is going to be priceless. The key to the figure will of course be the coffee mug. As I find out more information about what they are making I will of course provide updates. But for now you can look forward to getting some cool stuff from a movie that is loved by millions. Here is the press release that was just sent out.
