Diamond Select Announces They Are Making ‘Office Space’ Collectibles.

     October 31, 2006

When I was growing up the only way a movie or television show got made into a toy was if it was called Star Wars. For some reason no one had put it together that people like to buy toys based on their favorite shows, or their favorite movie character. Maybe back then getting the license was difficult, or perhaps due to new avenues of distribution, like the internet, certain niche products can now reach a select niche audience that back in the 70’s and 80’s would have made it unprofitable to make. Either way it seems like nowadays your show really has to suck for it not to get a toy made.

Almost every movie and television property now has a toy. And they don’t just have one – the studios now sell the licenses for their properties based on the size of the toy. So one company might own the license for a 12” version of a figure while another owns the 6” version. As a fan it can get very confusing trying to figure out who owns what.

But for what I am about to tell you, all of my problems with the toy/collectible industry just got put on hold.

In what can only be described as an “it’s about time moment,” Diamond Select Toy and 20th Century FOX have joined forces to create and sell Office Space collectibles. While the terms of the agreement let them make a lot of different items, I would imagine toys are high on the list. I don’t know about any of you, but having a Bill Lumbergh figure is going to be priceless. The key to the figure will of course be the coffee mug.

As I find out more information about what they are making I will of course provide updates. But for now you can look forward to getting some cool stuff from a movie that is loved by millions. Here is the press release that was just sent out.

DIAMOND SELECT TOYS AND 20TH CENTURY FOX LICENSING &amp MERCHANDISING SIGN OFFICE SPACE LICENSING AGREEMENT

Diamond Select Toys &amp Collectibles, LLC (DST) is pleased to announce its signing of the license for Twentieth Century Fox’s 1999 movie Office Space. Under the terms of the license, DST is able to produce a wide range of collectibles from the classic workplace comedy created by Mike Judge (King of the Hill, Beavis and Butt-head).

“Now everyone will have the opportunity to own their very own Office Space collectibles, as well as other items based on the characters and situations in the movie.” said Diamond Select Toys Marketing and Sales Supervisor, Michael Leavey. “The specific details of this product line are still under development, but fans of the movie will have several great items to look forward to. We promise everything Office Space will be done with flair.”

“Office Space has established itself as one of the icons of the comedy genre—we refer to it as a ‘generational discovery’ film—where new fans are finding Office Space year after year and it’s fan base continues to grow almost exponentially. DST is an ideal partner to create products based on the comedic pedigree of Mike Judge and will no doubt satisfy its legion of fans” said Michael Peikoff, Vice-President Domestic Licensing for 20th Century Fox.

Office Space marks the latest addition to Diamond Select Toys’ growing portfolio of diverse licenses – including sci-fi hits such as Star Trek and Stargate, Marvel Comics, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Street Fighter and films such as X-Men: The Last Stand, Ghost Rider, Joss Whedon’s Serenity and the Rocky series.
