In what is probably not the best way to start your year, Director John Hillcoat’s (The Road) upcoming film, The Promised Land, has fallen apart due to financing issues. From his Road production diary published in the UK tabloid The Telegraph [via The Playlist], here is Hillcoat’s lament:
My own new project – with a much-loved script by Nick Cave and a dream all-star cast – has fallen apart. The finance company that we began The Road with has also fallen apart, having to radically downsize to one remaining staff member. The great divide has begun, with only very low-budget films being made or huge 3-D franchise films – the birth of brand films such as Barbie, Monopoly: The Movie – who knows what’s next, Coca-Cola: The Movie?
I end the year appropriately – gazing into the apocalypse of my own industry.
Based on Matt Bondurant novel The Wettest Country In The World, the depression era crime-drama was set to shoot in February with powerhouses like Shia LaBeouf, Ryan Gosling, Scarlett Johansson, and Amy Adams in the cast. As we previously report, Adams was out, but it is depressing that Hillcoat has to kick off 2010 this way. However, as The Playlist reports, Hillcoat has other irons in the fire with The Death of Bunny Munro, Mob Cops, and a remake of 1973 French heist film La Bonne Annee.

That’s a major bummer.
That’s a major bummer.
Horrible news and I agree with Hillcoat’s comment “what’s next, Coca-Cola: The Movie?”
They have monopoly in development for starters.

This truly is the most depressing thing so far this year. I really hope it works out especially anything with Nick Cave. And what ever happened to The Road? I can’t see it anywhere!
