Director Kenny Ortega has left Paramount Pictures “Footloose” remake over differences on tone and budget. According to Variety, the studio wanted “an edgier drama with less emphasis on the musical numbers and a budget around $25 million or less.” Ortega, who previously directed all three “High School Musical” films and the upcoming Michael Jackson movie “This Is It”, wanted a film with elaborately staged musical numbers and a higher budget. More after the jump:
This isn’t the first time the “Footloose” project has run into issues as Zac Efron was originally going to star in the film. After he left the project, Ortega got Chace Crawford (“Gossip Girl”) to step in and he’s reportedly been prepping for the film while working on “Gossip Girl”.
With production still scheduled for this March, the studio is now looking at other directors to step in. The reason the film has to start in March is that’s when Crawford is on hiatus from “Gossip Girl”.
The other news from the Variety story is Julianne Hough has locked the role as the female lead. She was recently on “Dancing With the Stars” and is a country singer.More as we get it.
