“It’s all connected” has been a promotional phrase for the Marvel Cinematic Universe since the early days of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. But now Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency — a new BBC America show described as a strange combination of Doctor Who, Supernatural, and Sherlock — is putting its spin on it for the new trailer.
The network released a 30-second promo video that’s as erratic as the eponymous character. Image after image frantically shoots by as viewers see a piano impaled by a corpse, cops aiming guns, a black kitten pitter pattering across a blood-stained rug, creepy bald men, a corgi, a crossbow, a guitar, and much more. “It is connected,” Elijah Wood exclaims as his character Todd.

Dirk Gently hails from Chronicle and American Ultra writer Max Landis, who adapted the story from Douglas Adams’ comic novels of the same name. It essentially follows Dirk (Samuel Barnett), a detective who doesn’t really know what he’s doing but relies on what psychic abilities he does have to figure out cases for him. Wood’s Todd is his reluctant assistant.
“It’s sort of the reverse version of Psych,” Landis told Collider during San Diego Comic-Con, “where you had a guy who’s a brilliant detective pretending to be psychic. This is a guy who’s a shitty detective, who is psychic, pretending to be a brilliant detective.”
Also featured in the cast are Neil Brown Jr., Fiona Dourif, Jade Eshete, and Hannah Marks, to name a few. Robert Cooper acts as showrunner, while Landis directed some of the episodes. Season 1 of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency will feature one mystery played out over the course of eight episodes, which kick off on October 22 at 9 p.m. on BBC America.
