While the 3D format continues its move towards home entertainment with more and more titles being released on 3D Blu-ray every month, it looks like Disney is getting in on the action as well. The Walt Disney Company announced today that it plans to release at least fifteen films on 3D Blu-ray throughout 2011. Titles set to hit 3D home video include The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, The Nightmare Before Christmas, TRON: Legacy, and Tangled. Not only will the films be presented in 3D, but the special 3D Blu-ray release will come complete with 3D menus, 3D trailers, and an introduction to the world of Disney 3D from The Lion King characters Timon and Pumba. Executive Vice-President and General Manager of Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Lori MacPherson had this to say:

As our contemporary library of 3D content continues to grow, and the original artists and filmmakers meticulously ‘dimensionalize’ their work for release on the Blu-ray 3D format, we will be offering movie-lovers the most incredible in-home entertainment experience they will ever have

Hit the jump for more, including the other Disney titles planned for a 3D Blu-ray release. [We've updated this story with the official press release] In addition to the aforementioned titles, Disney also plans to release Meet the Robinsons, G-FORCE, and Chicken Little on 3D Blu-ray. While no one has mentioned Toy Story 3 yet, it’s probably a safe bet that the film will get a 3D Blu-ray release as well (I mean come on, if Meet the Robinsons is included, TS3 has to be in there someone too). Regarding the release of older titles in the Disney library, Lori MacPherson said the following:

In addition to offering new releases day-and-date in 3D and further cementing our leadership in the marketplace, we’re thrilled that consumers will have the exclusive Blu-ray 3D experience of two of the most celebrated Disney animated features, The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast in their homes.

Personally, I’m itching to see that theatrical release of Beauty and the Beast in 3D that the studio’s been postponing for so long now. Last we heard, the theatrical release had been pulled completely off Disney’s schedule, and now with this news of the film having a home video release it’s a little disheartening to think that Disney may be forgoing the theatrical route altogether. Did they really feel that the most profit would be gained from a home video release? I don’t know many people that have made the switch to 3D home video yet, but I know plenty who would be psyched to see Beauty and the Beast in 3D on the big screen once again.
