Lucas Till, Alex Pettyfer and Jeremy Irvine Vie for DIVERGENT Lead Opposite Shailene Woodley

     January 8, 2013

Back in November, we mentioned that Divergent was rounding up the likes of Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) and Brenton Thwaites (Blue Lagoon: The Awakening) to star opposite Shailene Woodley in the Neil Burger adaptation.  Reynor just landed a lead in Transformers 4so he’s likely off the table, but newcomers Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class), Alex Pettyfer (Magic Mike) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) are now vying for the coveted role.  Lionsgate is hoping that the property will be the next Twilight and/or The Hunger Games, which is a reasonable goal seeing as the Divergent novels lift themes from both series.  Hit the jump for more.

Variety reportsdivergent-book-cover that Till, Pettyfer and Irvine are all in the running for Divergent.  Till previously showed off his action skills in X-Men: First Class as part of the mutant ensemble.  Pettyfer had his shot at leading a teen action franchise with I Am Number Four, which never caught fire.  Irvine, who turned in a fine dramatic performance opposite an upstaging horse in War Horse, has yet to wow audiences as an action-oriented heartthrob, as far as my knowledge of that sort of thing goes.  Divergent fans, who’s your pick to play the romantic interest?

Here’s the synopsis from the Veronica Roth novel, Divergent (via Amazon):

In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are—and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she’s chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she’s kept hidden from everyone because she’s been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves . . . or it might destroy her.

All three of those dudes could pass for each other. They must use the same plastic surgeon and gotten the same chin implants.

  • Phil

Lucas Till is my pick out of the three. Jeremy Irvine maybe for the character Eric? Just real glad they got Shailene Woodley!

  • JJ

    None, please. All bad choices.

  • Jesus

    Attack of the clones.

Christ, I can’t believe this is what they are left with. there have got to be some other and better possibilities. Alex can act, but he is too much of an asshat to bank on for a possible multiple film franchise, and he previously even has said that he does not want to be part of ‘anymore’ young adult franchises. From War Horse, I did not get the impression that Jeremy is right for the character of Four/Tobias, but maybe he’s got more to show. I never saw Lucas Till in anything- but I dont like the smirk on his face in that picture. I disagree with the commenter however who said that all three of these guys look alike- I think they look very different. Casting director needs to take a trip to Australia to screen some new talent.

Somehow I knew after reading the books that Lucas Till would be in the running for this part. I would be totally fine with him playing Four. I think Irvine could play a good Caleb.

LUCAS TILL LUCAS TILL LUCAS TILL. I swear to god if Alex Pettyfer gets picked…

  • AnaB

Ugh… I think I’d rather go back to the rumor about Colton Haynes

Personally I like Jacob Artist as Four, but if I had to choose from anyone here, it would would probably be Irvine.

  • Clear Choice

The way I see it Lucas Till has the most potential. Alex is not a very decent actor. Irvine was great in War Horse but I can’t see how he would be opposite Shailene– it just doesn’t click. Till has a very strong stage presence and a lot of flexibility in his appearance which is really important for the series since the character has to evolve, and I think he would be amazing with Woodley. Couldn’t ask for a better option.

Okay, ever since reading Divergent, I’ve always pictured Jeremy Irvine as Four. Mainly, because I think he looks the most like Four, he’s an incredible actor and he’s absolutely gorgeous. I imagine Lucas Till as Will, again because of the looks and I think Till is more suited to that role personality wise. Alex Pettyfer can just go away, for all I care.

I definitely like Jeremy Irvine the most out of these three…

Okay, it had better be Jeremy! He deserves a role like this! He is incredibly talented and he can play a dramatic role and fall madly in love with a strong-willed girl, Great Expectations showed us that!! Can’t anyone else out there give him some credit! I pictured him as Four in the book and he can handle the role!

Jeremy Irvine is my pick. His appearance matches Four/Tobias. So yeah. I’d go for him.

Jeremy Irvine is by far the best choice!!!! These other two fools can’t act worth a lick they are just crummy “pretty boys” they are worthless. (no offense I love I am number four) but please NO to Alex and Lucus! Jeremy deserves this, he can really act! He looks the part too! He is tall those others are on the shorter side….
