First Image of Shailene Woodley in DIVERGENT

     April 24, 2013

Summit Entertainment only just began production on the YA adaptation Divergent, but the studio has now released the first image of Shailene Woodley as the film’s protagonist, Tris.  Based on the book by author Veronica Roth, the story takes place in a futuristic society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities, and Woodley’s Tris is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces termination due to her status as a “Divergent.”  While many will draw similarities to The Hunger Games (this debut image doesn’t exactly set the two apart), I’ve heard good things about Divergent and The Descendants star Woodley is proving to be one of the more exciting young talents working today.  She turns in a stellar performance in the upcoming The Spectacular Now.

Hit the jump to check out the debut image from director Neil Burger’s (Limitless) adaptation.  The film also stars Kate Winslet, Theo James, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn, Ray Stevenson, Mekhi Phifer, Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoë Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ben Lamb, Christian Madsen and Amy NewboldDivergent opens on March 21, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Divergent:

DIVERGENT is a thrilling adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior (Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

She’s not hot enough to play MJ…woops wrong movie.

  • Andrew

How can you rip on a film for being derivative of The Hunger Games when THG is a blatant rip off of Battle Royale?

    • tinypony

Because no one’s heard of Battle Royale.
I looked it up, and OK, yes, Hunger Games is obviously derived from that. But you forget, 99% of Americans know nothing of Japan except: atomic bombs, sushi, and Hello Kitty.
So we’ve never heard of Koushun Takami and I guess we don’t care.

      • Rich woa

        hahaha 99%…oh man

      • Andrew

Either you’re a troll then in that case…. ha ha

You are stupid, obviously you know enough about it that you can name the author and country of origin; So what if people haven’t heard of if it, it’s still plagiarism.

  • Danny

Good cast, not counting the ugly, wooden, Shailene Woodley (will never pull off MJ), but worst premise I’ve ever heard. Juvenile, cliched, and sounds like half a dozen other stupid teen flicks that we are plagued with every year.

    Pass, pass, and pass.
