Summit Entertainment premiered the first trailer for director Neil Burger’s (Limitless) adaptation of the Veronica Roth novel Divergent on MTV’s VMA’s tonight, and we have it here for your viewing pleasure. The futuristic thriller takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  This trailer is incredibly brief, and while it’s very clearly aimed at a younger audience, we do get a hint of the more violent aspects of the story and the severity of Tris’ situation.  Roth’s novel is quite a compelling page-turner, and my hope is that Burger has successfully transferred the book’s more intriguing aspects to the screen.  It’s tough to suss out much from this short trailer, but Kate Winslet definitely looks to be on point as the stern Jeanine.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer and to check out a handy infographic that clearly explains the world of Divergent. The film also stars Theo James, Miles TellerJai Courtney, Ashley Judd, Tony Goldwyn, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Ansel Elgort, Christian Madsen, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ben Lamb, and Amy Newbold. Divergent opens in traditional theaters and IMAX on March 21, 2014.

Poor girls career was over before it started because some nerds needed her to be better looking to play mj for tasm2. She’s not a super model but she’s not ugly and maybe her acting would’ve been great, we won’t know thanks to some fanboys who would probably still date this girl if she had a dick…. “She needs a 10inch waist and DDs!” Get real ya jerks

    • thatvideosite

I’m curious, did she really lose that big because of the fanboys or is that conjecture?

I’m pretty sure that’s not the reason. The small fan backlash just coincided with Sony Pictures decision.

My understanding is that when Sony decided to turn Spider-Man’s trilogy into a tetralogy (quadrilogy?), her role was moved to movie number 3. However, since she already had a contract for multiple movies with Divergent, Sony didn’t want to risk having scheduling conflicts, so she is no longer involved with The Amazing Spider-man series.

Your first instinct is right, Mr Bastos: it’s tetralogy.

Her career is booming….you must not really pay attention to film outside of super hero movies

      • Nick

Contracts and films in production will typically remain. She gets knocked off a film that could literally MAKE her career because viewers aren’t attractive, what do you think that will do in the long run?

  • Craig Boyd

My God! This looks stupid! Soooooooo Stupid! Soooooooooooooooo….

  • Brian

you really have no idea what you are talking about do you Nick. Her role in The Amazing Spiderman series was not removed, they just decided to not bring her into until third one they are making. They decided it wasn’t time for MJ to be brought in and be given justice to the character in the 2nd on so they are introducing her character in the 3rd movie. Not only that, but like Jack said her career is becoming huge. She just starred in the Spectacular Now (in which she received stellar reviews, she will be in this next big YA book to movie adaptation (which I have feeling will do well), and she is in the upcoming incredibly popular YA adaption of “A Fault In Our Stars.”

Her role was removed buddy, you should really read up more before you try to make someone look stupid or else you make yourself look stupid.

      • Dylan

Whether she was removed from the series or simply postponed, it was because she has a multi-film contract with Divergent, and they want to avoid scheduling conflicts with Woodley between ASM 2-3 and Divergent. X-Men: DOFP has to work around Jennifer Lawrence’s schedule with the Hunger Games, and the people involved in Spider-Man are wary of that inconvenience

This plays like a parody trailer for GENERIC DYSTOPIAN SCI-FI. Some subtlety would go a long way. Super lazy.

    Equilibrium?

I see what you mean ^^

Wasn’t this one of the running plots in Wreck-It-Ralph?

  • JK1193

It’ll be interesting seeing Kate do a movie like this as she hasn’t done many big-budget blockbuster films since Titanic, other than that, definately looks intriguing, will need to check out the book.

Love me some Shailene Woodley, but man, this movie’s going to be a tough sell to the general audience if they don’t highlight what’s unique about it (as opposed to what it might share with other dystopian sci-fi stories a la Hunger Games). What it’s got going for it right now is that it’s being released 4 months after the Hunger Games, right before the blockbuster season of summer 2014. To be continued…

i really want to give Shailene Woodley a chance…I think she’s a great actress and has amazing potential…but this is not it. I don’t know how much more generic and boring you can make a story- Plot point 1: “You’re different than everyone else.” Plot point 2: “You have to make your destiny, these two hot guys will help you but choose one in the end.” Plot point 3: “Survive?” I was really hoping for something different with Kate Winslet playing the villain, and it just confirms that this director is awful. He didn’t tell her to do ANYTHING…

Not a great trailer, the book is actually decent and hopefully the movie is as well. I agree about you with how 1 and 3 come off but there’s actually no romantic triangle, there’s one guy with the romance angle, none of the other male characters are even teased as a possibility.

This movie is drinking water and eating a mayonnaise sandwich on white bread, in a gray room, while watching golf. So, they steal the basic theme from Any Rand’s novel “Anthem” (keep them down and stupid), but add sex, violence, and no brains. If this is what excites teen readers today, our future is doomed or a helluva lot of fun.

Admittedly the book was rather lame. At least 4 looks suitably tough.
