Summit Entertainment has released a new full trailer and poster for director Neil Burger‘s futuristic thriller Divergent.  Based on the novel of the same name by Veronica Roth, the film takes place in a society where people are divided into factions based on their personalities. Tris (Shailene Woodley) is a young girl who doesn’t fit into any of the pre-assigned groups and faces grave consequences due to her status as a “Divergent.”  The trailer does a nice job of setting up the world of the film as well as teasing both the adventurous and romantic aspects of the story.  Unlike Twilight, however, there is no love triangle in Divergent,  and Tris is very much a strong and independent female character.  Having read and enjoyed the book, this trailer works pretty well for me, but I’m interested to see how those unfamiliar with the source material respond.  It’s tough to tease the most exciting aspects of the story without spoiling major plot points, but things get extremely intense.

Hit the jump to watch the trailer, and if you missed any of our set visit coverage be sure to check out 30 Things to Know and interviews with Burger, Woodly & Theo James, Zoe Kravitz, and producer Douglas Wick.  The film also stars Kate WinsletMiles TellerJai CourtneyAshley JuddTony GoldwynRay StevensonMaggie QMekhi PhiferAnsel ElgortChristian MadsenBen Lloyd-HughesBen Lamb, and Amy Newbold.  Divergent opens in traditional theaters and IMAX on March 21, 2014.

Here’s the official synopsis for Divergent:

In a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities, Tris Prior is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group.  When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.

Honestly, the tattoo posters were better. They were more visually elegant and compelling, not to mention original. This looks like your run-of-the-mill photoshopped YA action poster.

I have hope for this film. Won’t be first in line, might catch it on DVD.

He punches one guy and they all fall down…brilliant lol.

Probably from one of the “simulation” scenes. Not that it makes it any less weird to see, particularly out of context, but at least it’s something that happens in his head and not literally happening like that.

Having never read the book, I found the trailer to be exciting. It looks to be a fun flick but nothing more than that. I understood the premise of the story from the trailer (I think) so maybe it can appeal to the non-book fans. Plus, the cast looks excellent so let’s see.

Poster is sexist as hell so thumbs down for that.

Shailene Woodley so ugly that I couldn’t even finish the trailer

As an adaption of the book, it looks excellent! Now, taking into account that I didn’t really adore the book, I think this movie will be just fine. Looks like Theo James nailed it. Not expecting something great, but I’m not saying it can’t be.

I have one big problem with YA movies/novels. Teen romance. I just can’t stand it. It seems so awkward. So jarring. I have no problem with romance done right, but IMHO teen romance is rarely done right. I guess I am not the target audience, because I’m not teenager anymore, even though I am still in early 20s.
Shame, this movie/novels seem to have an interesting premise, but the teen romance will probably ruin it for me.

    2:18 looks horribly fake

  • Derek Lange

Meh, looks way to cliche. I feel like the story is predictable beyond belief. Woodley is a very underrrated actor and I feel she deserves more than this.

I enjoyed the book more than the Hunger Games and I thought this trailer was okay. The cast looks good. Here’s hoping it will deliver the goods cause the story imho, is a great one.

This trailer tells me nothing. After watching it, I still have no clue what this movie’s about.

  • Dimehrgent

What in the fresh hell is this movie about? I have no idea and I’ve watched this trailer 3 times.
