This latest report comes from The Wrap with the outlet initially claiming that both Cumberbatch and Joaquin Phoenix are still “very much in the mix.”  However, soon after publishing the article, The Wrap added an update from Phoenix’s publicist insisting that his negotiations are “dead dead dead.  A couple of weeks ago they mutually decided to part ways.  It was over before the New York Film Festival.”

Does that mean the Cumberbatch claim could be erroneous as well?  At this point, anything is possible.  And that could be the case for Farrell and yet another Doctor Strange hopeful, Keanu Reeves, as well.  The Wrap notes that Farrell will finish production on the new season of True Detective just in time to shoot Doctor Strange, but I’d like to bet the project would fit into other contenders’ schedules as well.  The Wrap also goes as far to say “Cumberbatch remains high on the studio's list and they were surprised when the actor's name was omitted from this week's round of media reports.”

If this report is accurate, Cumberbatch, Farrell and Reeves are our frontrunners, and apparently Leto, Isaac and Justin Theroux are still going after the role as well.  But again, nothing is a sure thing until Marvel says so.
