In a recent interview, Kevin Feige confirmed that Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man would be the official starting point of Marvel’s “Phase Three.” What other films will be included in the post-Avengers 2 grouping? For starters, none other than the long-rumored Doctor Strange adaptation. Feige mentioned Doctor Strange in the same sentence as the “Phase Two” film Guardians of the Galaxy, since both pictures will be somewhat outside of the normal realm of core characters we’ve come to know and love. Hit the jump for more on “Phase Three” from Feige and an update on Iron Man 3 and Avengers 2.
Feige recently spoke to MTV about the slate of Marvel films starting in 2015. We know that Ant-Man will debut on November 6th of that year and here’s what Feige had to say about the project:
“‘Ant-Man’ is definitely part of Phase Three. Like ‘Iron Man 3,’ it’s certainly set in the Marvel Universe, but it’s also through the lens of Edgar Wright — which is the only reason we’re making the movie…I’ve known Edgar since our first lunch together at Comic-Con in 2004. He asked me what Marvel was doing with ‘Ant-Man’ — we weren’t even a studio then; what a difference eight years makes! It’s very much an ‘Ant-Man’ origin movie from the perspective of Edgar Wright and his co-writer Joe Cornish. It will of course be firmly planted in the MCU, but a different corner than we’ve seen before.”
Feige went on to tease about other characters that we might see during “Phase Three,” but also confirmed Doctor Strange in the process:
“Beyond that… ‘Ant-Man’ is the only one officially announced, but you probably don’t have to look too far to guess at the next list of characters we’re toying with and beginning to develop…’Doctor Strange,’ which I’ve been talking about for years, is definitely one of them. He’s a great, original character, and he checks the box off this criteria that I have: he’s totally different from anything else we have, just like ‘Guardians of the Galaxy.’ He’s totally different from anything we’ve done before, as is ‘Ant-Man,’ which keeps us excited.”
Before we can get to Phase Three, we must remember to stop and enjoy Phase Two! Starting in May, Iron Man 3 will kick off Marvel’s second set of films that will lead to The Avengers 2 in 2015. Just how soon can we expect to start seeing groundwork for the plot of the second Marvel mash-up? According to Feige (via MTV):
“I would say that the exercise of this film [Iron Man 3] is very much standalone, more so than any ‘Iron Man’ film since the first one. But because we are in Phase Two and we’re heading towards another ‘Avengers’ movie, there’s certainly a road that’s being paved — you just might not notice it…While you’re driving on the road, not knowing where it’s going, you might not realize that there are road signs and signals and lane changes that we’re setting up now — they might not be readily apparent the first time you see the movie…In this one, it has less to do with any sort of larger S.H.I.E.L.D. or cosmic overlay, but much more about Tony, his frame of mind, his viewpoint and the things he wants to pursue.”
Feige also updated the progress of The Avengers 2 and commented on Joss Whedon’s script so far:
“It’s still early days, but I told [Whedon] after reading the first sketch outline he delivered — and there’s a lot of work still to do, he has to sit down and turn this into a movie — but there are already seven things in there that are worth the price of admission alone.”
Avengers 2 aside, are you excited to see Doctor Strange on the big screen? We previously reported that the rumor of Viggo Mortensen taking on the role had been denied, but who would you want to see don the cape?

Nicolas Cage as Doctor Strange. I know he is ghost rider but those movies should be ignored and aren’t considered as part of the same universe anyways.
Nooo Nicholas cage is awful actor
I Agree.
Am excited about the news of Doctor Strange, but only if somebody else other than Cage played him,….he makes me cringe!
No wait, what about Bruce Willis as Dr. Strange.
Enough with the silly suggestions, here’s a proper one…Johnny Depp starring and Guillermo del Toro directing and Depp’s on again off again girlfriend Amber Heard as Clea and Chow Yun Fat as Wong and Brian Cox as Baron Mordo (who after the credits reveals he’s been doing the bidding of his master Dormamu).

I say this any time there is talk of a Doctor Strange movie, but it obviously has to be Johnny Depp.
Wow!! that’s agood one. nice job.
Depp has made all his characters the same and WAY to out there. Is Strange a strange character? yes…but the character is very serious in his unconventional ways. He can’t be a Depp Character that would make him very laughable and dumb. No Johnny depp
For Doctor Strange, I would go with either Johnny Depp or Patrick Dempsey.
Jim Caveizel. I like Viggo too though.
I 2nd Jim C. Watch person of interest and you will agree…this guy is like Ruffalo taking the hulk role…it’s a perfect fit.
JIM C IS DOCTOR STRANGE! Watch Count of Monte Cristo and you’ll believe.
You idiots need to get of johnny drops dick he is a great character actor but not as strange he couldn’t handle or fit that role
There’s a guy here in England he plays the part of michael moon in BBC’s Eastenders he’s called steve john shepherd he would be spot on as doc strange, tall cool looking and a shit hot actor
Joseph Fiennes for Doctor Strange
Viggo, Jim Caviezel and Patrick Dempsey are solid candidates.
Now that he’s older… i’d like Guy Pearce to take the role.
Wooooah! Second that! Guy Pearce would be PERFECT, because he is an awesome actor with a lot of range, and doesn’t have the distraction of being a superstar like Johnny Depp. Marvel, you need to either use Guy or an unknown that just nails the role.
Nah, Depp is perfect. He is Dr Strange. Phase three will need a movie star as Marvel heroes at that point would have reached saturation point. In cases like these, star power gets the audience in.
guy pearce is already in the marvel universe in iron-man 3 as a villian. i dont think that would work.
Guy Pearce is my choice.
All we are saying is give Pearce a chance!
Guy is already in ironman 3
Shit…. My boy Guy Pearce is already in Iron Man 3. He was my first choice.
Jim Caviezal would be my second.
I think Benedict Cumberbatch is too villainous-looking for the role. I just don’t see it. I don’t.
Viggo would be better suited for the role. For a wild card: Scott Speedman.
Benedict Cumberbatch. Seriously. Who else would be better? The answer is no one. Watch every episode of Sherlock and then tell me that’s not our Doctor.
Cumberbatch would be the greatest with Chow Yun Fat as Wu and Jet Li as the outgoing Sorcerer Supreme
My vote is for Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr.Strange
Pearce or Cumberbatch for Strange,Del Toro to direct.
Actually, Del Toro said in an interview that he would love to do a Dr. Strange movie!! Hopefully when the time comes, he’ll be available to take it.
guy pearce is already playing aldrich killian in iron man 3
Jack Huston should play Doctor Strange. He was being considered for Star-Lord but he’d be a great Doctor Strange.
Like Evans
Luke Evans ( my new phone)
He looks the most like Dr.Strange.
As much as he looks like him…. I don’t think Luke Evans has the acting chops.
No.
Jim Caviezel and Benedict Cumberbatch are my picks!!
How about nobody because these are terrible Marvel characters
how did you come to that concusion
JIM C IS DOCTOR STRANGE! Watch Count of Monte Cristo and you\’ll believe.
I googled some pics and saw some clips, and I must say, he does look a lot like Dr. Strange with the beard!! He’s definitely my first choice.
Liam Neeson as Doctor Strange!
Other choices: Wes Bentley, Johnny Depp, Hugh Laurie, Viggo Mortensen, or Jimmy Smits.
Shit…. My boy Guy Pearce is already in Iron Man 3. He was my first choice.
Jim Caviezal would be my second.
I think Benedict Cumberbatch is too villainous-looking for the role. I just don\’t see it. I don\’t.
Viggo would be better suited for the role. For a wild card: Scott Speedman.
Lee Horsley as Strange.
They went that route already..horrible film…and he was absolutely wooden in it.
Is he even alive?
It’s got to be Johnny Depp. How has the look, he just needs the grey at the temples.
Jonnny Deppy for Dr. Strange.
Holy mother…imagine Depp as Strange with Downey JNR as Iron Man in a movie. Kerching!!! Marvel has just made another billion dollars worldwide.
I know DDL wouldn’t do this but he would be great. Tom Hardy I think would be pretty badass as well.
I guess that kills any hope we have of seeing Spider-Man in the sequels…
That last statement was about Lee Horsely..
I can’t see anyone but Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Doctor Strange
Im all for Johnny Depp for the role, what better to play Dr Strange than someone who is known for strange roles? My other choices would be Gary Oldman, Jeffrey Dean Morgan or maybe Timophy Dalton, Hugh Laurie would be good but id rather he play Mr Fantastic
