First Look at Peter Capaldi in Costume as Filming on DOCTOR WHO Series 8 Begins

by     Posted 233 days ago

Production has officially begun on the eighth series of Doctor Who, complete with an entirely new Doctor.  Peter Capaldi steps into the titular role recently vacated by Matt Smith, and BBC has released the first image of Capaldi in full costume alongside co-star Jenna Coleman.  The first episode of series eight was written by showrunner Steven Moffat, while the second was penned by Phil Ford; both are being directed by Kill List and Sightseers helmer Ben Wheatley.  Speaking about his first day of filming, Capaldi said, “New job, first day, slightly nervous.  Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

Filming on Doctor Who will continue in Cardiff until August 2014.  Hit the jump to check out the first image and to read remarks from the show’s crew regarding the new series.

Here’s the official press release with remarks from the Doctor Who crew:

The new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, stepped on set today for his first full day of filming as production begins on series 8 of the hit BBC show.

10.2 million tuned-in on Christmas Day to get their first glimpse of Capaldi in one of TV’s most iconic roles in the festive special ‘The Time of the Doctor’, which saw Matt Smith hang-up his bow tie after 4 years in the role.

Capaldi was revealed as the Doctor in a live BBC One show in August, after months of speculation about the next Doctor’s identity.

Arriving on set in Cardiff to begin filming, Peter Capaldi said:

“New job, first day, slightly nervous. Just like the Doctor, I’m emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world.”

Steven Moffat, Lead Writer and Executive Producer, added:

“First the eyebrows! Then, at Christmas, the face! Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins.”

Accompanying the Doctor on his adventures will be companion Clara Oswald, played by Jenna Coleman.

The first episode of series 8 has been written by Steven Moffat with the second episode penned by Phil Ford.  These are the first episodes that Peter will shoot and are directed by Ben Wheatley.

Ben Stephenson, Controller of Drama Commissioning, said:

“Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi’s Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today. It’s going to be one hell of a ride and I can’t wait for the journey to start.”

Charlotte Moore, Controller BBC One, commented:

“A new year, a new face, a new Doctor! 2014 has arrived and it’s Peter Capaldi’s time so let the adventures begin!”

Filming is taking place in Cardiff until August 2014.  Doctor Who is executive produced by Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin, and produced by Nikki Wilson and Peter Bennett.  It is a BBC Cymru Wales production for BBC One.

the outfit- purple frock/ lavender shirt, back to the neck tie (also lavender), vest and trousers (purple also), and stop watch. I like it. It suits him

It’s Matt Smith’s costume sans bow tie, so this is not his definite look (though it looks good on him) ;)

isn’t that Matt Smith’s final outfit and this is just filming post regeneration. Capaldi isn’t in his Doctor outfit yet.

Does he look like Draco Malfoy all grown up?

they’re shooting until August? January to August? I know nothing about filming TV shows – but isn’t that an ungodly amount of time to film 10-12 episodes?

Normally takes about 2 weeks to film an episode so that’s 24 weeks of filming. Then with post production and effects work on top it probably will take that long. On the budgets the BBC have for the show they can’t do it in HBO kind of time so it takes a little bit longer. Will all be worth it hopefully come August though :)

Quality over quantity. These episodes are like small movies now.

This isn’t his costume. It’s Matt Smith’s without the bow tie. This is likely right after regeneration, like Smith running around in Tenant’s tattered suit.

he barely hits the joker costume

exactly blakeavon now i wasnt around when the 1st doctor 5th 4th 7th doctors were around so people who have watched the show for years will call me a plastic fan(someone who hasnt followed it and just watched the new series) however ive seen nearly every single episode i buy-with my own money, dvds of the 1st 2nd and so on so i really hate when fans say the writings poor the writings this and that watch the 1st doctors episodes no continues storys or anything and new fans would call that poor writing, steven moffat is developing the show into bigger things the whole show is a question doctor who? so the stories have to be a mistery.
