And the new Doctor is…Peter Capaldi!  Following Matt Smith’s departure from the immensely popular BBC series Doctor Who, fans have been speculating about who would be cast as the new Doctor.  The anticipation ended today, though, as the announcement was made that Scottish actor Peter Capaldi has been tapped to play the Twelfth Doctor in Doctor Who.  Capaldi is probably best known for his profanity-filled role in the BBC comedy series The Thick of It and the follow-up film In the Loop.  He most recently appeared this summer in the zombie tentpole World War Z, literally credited as “W.H.O. Doctor” for his role towards the end of the Brad Pitt film.  He has also appeared on a number of British TV series, including Torchwood.

The 55-year-old Capaldi marks a return to an older gentleman playing the Doctor following 30-year-old Matt Smith’s tenure, and it’ll be interesting to see what he brings to the series.  Film-wise, Capaldi will also be seen opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the upcoming WikiLeaks pic The Fifth Estate and has a role alongside Angelina Jolie in Disney’s Maleficent.  Hit the jump to watch video from the event at which Capaldi was revealed as the new Doctor, which also includes a brief interview with the actor.
