BBC Three is launching a Young Adult Doctor Who spinoff series, Class, from acclaimed YA author, Patrick Ness. The spinoff series will be set in contemporary London where “Incredible dangers are breaking through the walls of time and space, and with darkness coming, London is unprotected.” Ness will executive produce alongside Steven Moffatt and Brian Minchi. Production will kick off around Wales in Spring 2016 with a plan to air the series later that year.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat sang Ness’ praises,

“No one has documented the dark and exhilarating world of the teenager like Patrick Ness, and now we’re bringing his brilliant story-telling into Doctor Who. This is growing up in modern Britain – but with monsters!”

On his first television series, writer Patrick Ness says,

“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself. There’s so much room there for all kinds of amazing stories, and to work with Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin to find a place to tell one of my own has been an absolute joy. I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of Class, to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your A-Levels.”

My, my…so many questions! What characters will pop up in the spinoff? How closely related will it be to the action of Doctor Who proper? BBC has commissioned three Doctor Who spinoffs in the past — K9 and Company, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, which all centered around one of the Doctor’s former companions or travel mates. Jenna Coleman‘s Clara Oswald is said to be at the end of her tenure as companion, could she be off to headline her own series? Or perhaps Michelle Gomez‘s Missy, who has emerged as a fan favorite in recent years.

What do you think? Who would you like to see get their own series? Do you like the Doctor Who spinoffs? Sounds off in the comments.
