Dolph Lundgren Talks THE EXPENDABLES 2, and Who He’d Like to See in THE EXPENDABLES 3

     August 15, 2012

Simon West‘s The Expendables 2 opens this weekend, and the film has Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) and his gang of mercenaries out for revenge while also having to deal with a baddie (Jean-Claude Van Damme) who wants some weapons-grade plutonium.  I was very disappointed with the first film, but the sequel is a blast.  I think one of the big problems with the original was the lack of a great antagonist.  But by bringing in Van Damme (who is one of the best parts of the sequel), the fight scenes are a lot more fun.  The Expendables 2 also stars Jason Statham, Yu Nan, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Chuck Norris, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Liam Hemsworth, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

At the recent Los Angeles press day I got to speak with Dolph Lundgren.  We talked about his reaction to the first film and the sequel, how he prepared for the second film, filming in Bulgaria, the big action scenes, and who would he like to see in The Expendables 3.  Hit the jump to watch.

Finally, here is my interview with Jason Statham.

Dolph Lundgren:

  • What was his reaction to the first film and also the sequel.  Talks about what’s different in the sequel.
  • How did he prepare for the sequel
  • What was it like to film in Bulgaria and the big action scenes
  • Who would he like to join the cast in The Expendables 3

I really wanted to like the movie. Like, really, really, really wanted to like it. But, besides the career ressurecting turn by Van Damme, the movie was a total bust. No plot. No story. Characters that pop in and out for no other purpose than to go: Hey, there’s that guy! Jet Li bails after 2 minutes (who can blame him? He was criminally underused in both movies). It’s just a fat, bloated parade of stars with gallons of cringe-inducing dialogue (you’ve been back enough? That doesn’t even make sense when you get the blatant, hammer on the nose reference). It’s just sad. These guys deserve a good film. They didn’t get one.
