DOMINION: DINOSAURS VERSUS ALIENS to Feature Talking Aliens and Cultured Dinosaurs

How exactly did the dinosaurs go extinct? Was it the scientifically supported theory of a prehistoric bolide smashing into Earth and causing a gradual extinction? Or was it aliens? If you are excited by the prospect of the latter, then Barry Sonnenfeld and Grant Morrison’s new collaborative project, Dominion: Dinosaurs Versus Aliens, is for you! But just how are those aliens and dinosaurs going to communicate with the audience, you ask. Well, Sonnenfeld has graciously provided an answer to that burning question in a recent interview with io9.  His answers are almost weirder than you can imagine.  Hit the jump to see what he says.

Here’s what Sonnenfeld had to say about the project in a recent interview with Steve:

I came up with the idea of Dominion: Dinosaurs Vs. Aliens, I thought it would be really cool movie and isn’t like anything I’ve done before because it obviously isn’t a comedy, but I do believe that everything we believe is what Tommy Lee Jones says to Will Smith on that park bench in the first movie, “You know what? 1,000 years ago, the world knew the Earth was flat; 500 years ago, they knew that the Earth was the center of the universe; imagine what you’ll [know] tomorrow.” So my feeling is everything we believe may be true or may not be true, so I wanted to tell the “real story” of how the dinosaurs got extinct 65 million years ago, and it’s dinosaurs vs. aliens, and that would be a photorealistic CG movie in 3D.

And now, in an interview with io9 (via SlashFilm), here’s what Sonnenfeld had to say regarding making the alien and dinosaur characters accessible to the audience:

We’re so excited about Dinosaurs Vs. Aliens. How are you and Grant Morrison going to make non-human creatures relatable to the audience?

Barry Sonnenfeld: First, we have to sell the project. We’re going out to LA in about 6 weeks with a pre-vis and our script, to see who wants to buy into it. We’ve already had lots of ideas. The aliens speak in a way [that] you can understand them. And the dinosaurs — they actually have a certain amount of culture, through grunts and doing stuff with their bodies and sticks. We believe that the Dinosaurs had culture. They didn’t speak, but they did have other ways of communicating. It won’t be a problem, and it will be pretty fantastic.

What kind of weapons do the dinosaurs have?

They actually a few weapons, they learn from the aliens. They’re very smart — that’s one of the things about the dinosaurs. That makes them possibly the way they really were. They have rudimentary things, but they learn as they go along from the aliens. You now know more than anyone else about this [movie].
